Four new homes in Tennant Creek are ready for tenants, and a construction tender has been awarded for a further six.
The one-bedroom units at 86 Peko Road will augment the public housing stock in Tennant Creek.
The $1.7 million project provided a significant boost to local employment with Asbuild NT hiring 74 employees, including 14 Aboriginal employees, to complete construction of the new homes.
Aboriginal Business Enterprise Blueprint NT has been awarded a $3.4 million contract to build a further six one bedroom homes at 74 Peko Road, with works anticipated to commence next month. The homes are expected to be completed by March 2025.
Acknowledging the demand for public housing in the town, Minister for Urban Housing Ngaree Ah Kit said the extra homes would make a difference.
“Having a safe, stable home makes a significant difference to people’s quality of life, and it benefits the wider community too,” she said.
“Housing construction is good news for tenants and good news for the local community, which benefits from the employment and economic opportunities it creates.”
Minister Ah Kit said in a separate project worth $6.9 million, the NT Government had partnered with the Australian Government, Housing Australia and Venture Housing Company to deliver 12 new social and affordable homes in Tennant Creek, as announced in the Tennant & District Times last week.
“These construction projects not only boost the town’s housing supply, they represent a collective $12 million economic injection,” she said.
