Tennant Creek unites for colourful NAIDOC Week celebrations

Recent stories

The town’s main street was a vibrant sight on Monday morning, as the community gathered for the official NAIDOC Week March.

The march, a symbol of unity and celebration, started from the NLC building and culminated at the Civic Hall.

This year, the march was graced by the presence of Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, who walked alongside the Tennant Creek community, adding to the spirit of the event.

As the march progressed, a significant moment unfolded. For the first time, all three flags were raised at the Business Hub, marking a new tradition and a moment of pride for the community.

Once everyone had arrived and settled into their seats, the NAIDOC Week Awards were presented to outstanding individuals from the previous year.

Award Winners:

Male Elder of the Year – Jerry Kelly
Apprentice of the Year – Sharon Parlow
Female Youth of the Year – Thalia Kelly
Female Sportsperson of the Year – Nalarni Paterson
Artist of the Year – Heather Anderson
Caring for Country and Culture Award – Gladys Brown
Female Elder of the Year – Melanie Brodie
Lifetime Achievement Award – Judy-Kaye Knox
Male Sportsperson of the Year – Elijah Baker
Male Youth of the Year – Andre Kelly

The official NAIDOC Week events kicked off the day prior at the Youth Centre with performances by the Work Camp Band and Samoan Dancers and plenty of activities for all the family to kick off the week.

Each day, events followed the theme of “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud” and catered to all age groups, from cultural arts and crafts for the little ones to a wonderful lunch for the Elders, a family movie night, and a Yarning Circle at the Tennant Creek Hospital.
