Extraordinary community response to emergency evacuation

Roper Gulf Regional Council would like to thank everyone who was involved in the emergency evacuation of the Jilkminggan community on Thursday 25 February 2021. The decision was made by the Local Emergency Committee to evacuate 211 people from Jilkminggan as flood waters continued to rise and surround the community.

New look hospital – work begins on $8.8 million renovation at Weipa

Expecting mothers from Weipa and the Western Cape will be able to give birth locally this time next year as work begins on the upgrade of Weipa Hospital. Around $8.86 million worth of upgrades are under way, or about to start, at the Weipa Hospital and scheduled for completion in the coming months.

Dunoon Dam – Respecting the wishes of traditional owners on Dunoon Dam

WATER Northern Rivers Alliance calls on Rous County Council and state water planners to respect the wishes of Widjabul Wia-bal people who have voiced their opposition to the proposed Dunoon Dam. The dam would obliterate important cultural heritage ancient burial sites. Yesterday John Roberts, a senior Elder of the Widjabul Wia-bal stated that when he and other traditional custodians were consulted about the dam in 2011 they made it clear that no level of disturbance was acceptable.

Huge success for Ngukurr Leak Reduction Project

Roper Gulf Regional Council would like to congratulate the Ngukurr community, for winning the 2020 Tidy Towns Sustainable Community Award for Water Conservation. The town’s water conservation success has been a result of Power and Water Corporation’s Ngukurr Leak Reduction Project, a joint project with the Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development (DLGHCD) that located and repaired water leaks in Ngukurr. Through its not-for-profit subsidiary Indigenous Essential Services, this project enabled Power and Water to provide sustainable water supply to the Ngukurr community and support continual community growth.

Cape York could be first in line for vaccinations

Cape York's Indigenous communities are likely to be at the top of the priority list for the first batch of COVID-19 vaccinations in Australia ... Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said it made sense to target vulnerable communities. "We need to protect those communities in the Cape and Torres Strait and it should also help prevent another biosecurity bubble, which was devastating for the Cape economy," he said ...

Latest Arts and Culture Grants Program outcomes revealed

Outcomes of the October 2020 round of the Arts and Culture Grants Program have been announced. Arts South Australia’s Arts and Culture Grants Program invests in artists and organisations to support a vibrant arts ecology. Congratulations to fifty one successful applicants of the October 2020 round, with grants totalling over $1.4 million awarded. Grant opportunities on offer in the October 2020 round included Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Grants, Projects, Development and Major Projects categories.
