Riders rapt to return for first rally
The Upper Murray Pony Club (UMPC) made a well received return to Corryong on Sunday, holding its first rally day since the 2019-2020 bushfires and having recently relocated from Tintaldra to the Corryong Recreation Reserve. Club president and Chief Instructor, Heidi Walton, declared the day a huge success with five junior and four adult riders completing the day’s activities.
Crime control authorities: Answers, please
When it comes to dealing with social and crime problems in Alice Springs, what are the legal obligations of government departments and publicly funded NGOs? How well are they following their mission statements? How much taxpayers’ money do they get and how are they spending it?
New policing measures
Following a visit to Toowoomba last week by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, a raft of measures has been introduced that aim to combat crime. The community safety reforms, introduced to state Parliament last week, include extreme high-visibility police patrols becoming a permanent feature of policing in the Toowoomba region and the State Flying Squad being expanded and given a youth justice focus to tackle youth crime hot spots whenever and wherever they emerge.

Serena Kirby. Seventeen-year-old snowboarder Henry Edmondson has had another hectic 12 months ... Having just returned from numerous overseas trips Henry is now ranked second in the Oceania Freeride category for under-18 males and ranked 13th in the world.
Teens raise arson alert
Patricia Gill. Firefighters battled steep terrain and near-inaccessible bush initially resorting to backpack sprays to contain a deliberately lit fire on Mt Hallowell at the weekend. The fire on the northern side of the mountain was reported about 5.30pm on Friday night and was started by teenagers whom Denmark Police say are known to them and have been dealt with.
Putting community safety first with tougher action on youth crime and its causes: Palaszczuk, Ryan, Linard
It will be harder for serious repeat offenders to get bail and there will be even more investment in tackling the complex causes of youth crime, the Palaszczuk Government announced ... The new investment of $332 million will also help boost police resources ... including a new $25 million injection for high visibility police patrols and $17 million for expanded joint flying squads.
Four staff, special facility, for one kid on the street a fortnight
The location of the facility in Alice Springs for children at risk, which between its opening on November 27 last year and January 10 has been used by just five youngsters, is a secret. So is its cost.
Country is the classroom
Rod Moss. Bernadine Johnson, Ricky Ryder, Aureole Perkins, Therese Johnson and Arthur Webb are wandering in search of the purple-flowered plant awele awele, the bush tomato. Looking for bush tucker was a weekend pursuit. How gratifying to see these activities continuing apace in the formal structure provided by Children’s Ground/ Ampe-kenhe Ahelh.
Youth steal from another vulnerable resident
Emily Sherwood has restricted verbal capacity, and so it was even more heartbreaking to hear that she too was set upon by three teens recently. Emily uses a gopher and was heading home from the Memo Club about 10.30pm last week when the shit-bag trio set upon her, trying to grab her bag off her shoulder, almost choking her in the process and pulling her from the vehicle.
Coward teens terrorise loved local
He got out bed, into the wheelchair and threw a towel over his lap. As he peered out the window he heard a "godawful" yelp and witnessed the girls kicking poor Max in the guts. Wanting to protect his beloved companion, Greg raced outside to confront three teenagers, who all appeared to be girls. They started throwing chairs, rocks and concrete pieces at him, before roughly tipping him out of his wheelchair.
Cricketing success for Crump siblings
Cambooya siblings Kyrna and Tomas Crump represented Queensland in the National Cricket Inclusion Championships. Kyrna is the first female to represent the State in the cricketers with an intellectual disability team and was the female competing in that division. Tom is the youngest to be picked, at the age of 14.
Welcoming Central School’s new principal
Nadia Mills came to teach at Central School last year, and this year she accepted the position of Principal ... Nadia has been teaching Aboriginal kids all her life ... her first teaching position was in an Aboriginal community called Alekarenge, 400 km north of Alice Springs. 'I love teaching bush Aboriginal kids. They're so resilient, creative and engaged.'
Meet Melissa, the new teacher at St Therese’s
Miss Melissa has joined the teaching staff at St. Therese’s, where she is teaching Kurrika class ... Since coming out here Melissa has also indulged in one of her passions, photography ... She said they could not believe the colour and beauty of the local natural environment, especially the river.
Kids trouble: The government has to fix it, says Mayor
"There are enough organisations that are funded to make sure that kids are safe. Unfortunately there is a hole in the delivery, kids are falling through the cracks. We have so many service providers in Alice Springs. There is no level of accountability. Preston address among two robberies
A 16-years-old Newtown boy has been charged with 21 offences following a series of property crime incidents including an alleged armed robbery at Preston ... the same group allegedly attended a Hinchliffe Drive property in Kearneys Spring, where it is alleged an occupant was struck with a hammer, before stealing a BMW Z4.
Nature school looking for space as enrolments jump 70 per cent
The Kwoorabup Nature School has for the past 10 years explored options to expand and believes the best is to use the neighbouring Denmark Lions Club lease area. The school is WA’s ï¬rst Nature School and has experienced a 70 per cent growth in 18 months.
Allora could have another games champion
Claire from Allora P-10 State School has set three new swim records in the Pool. At the School’s recent Annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival Claire won the Open 50m Freestyle, Open 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly.
