Buti needs to but into the ATAR debate
After the heritage debacle Tony Buti is on notice by his backbench. After this year's ATAR results come out he will be on notice by the State's parents. By the next election, if he does not leave his mark on education, he will be like those kids who did not take the hard route through school, wondering what his next job will be.
Green light for $5m ‘cannabis’ health retreat
The Denmark Shire Council has given the green light to the building of a $5 million health retreat at The Dam on Raintree Estate 10km west of Denmark. Billed as Australia’s first cannabis health retreat the development includes a reception, lodge, six two-bedroom chalets and six off-grid eco-huts.
Classic EV goes on show
Serena Kirby. Nearly 100 classic vehicles lined Strickland Street last weekend for Denmark’s annual classic car show. The event, now run for the third time, again drew a large crowd of car enthusiasts ... Owned by Albany resident Bill Dixon and one of only two in WA, the lovingly restored 1917 Rauch & Lang vehicle featured seven batteries in the boot and seven under the bonnet.
‘No’ risks ‘return to servitude’

The King Neptune exhibition is on in the Downstairs Gallery in a recently revamped area, which was originally part of the gallery, until Sunday, October 1 ... Ewing said the gallery has been there for more than 20 years and they were planning something special for the gallery’s 21st anniversary in March.
More ‘Back-of-Boat’ lobsters to lift local supply: Punch
Western Australia's prized western rock lobsters will be even more readily available to WA seafood lovers, with a major boost approved for direct Back-of-Boat lobster sales this 2023-24 fishing season. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has increased the landing limit for back-of-boat sales from 200 to 999 lobsters per fishing trip.
Flying thoughts on air freight
At the bottom of all those outgoing planes is spare cargo space or what they call belly cargo which we can fill with rock lobster going to China and chilled lamb and beef going to the Middle East ... If the government is banking on boxed sheep meat replacing live exports, then its decision on Qatar is a step backwards.

MP criticizes reforms
Member of Barker Tony Pasin has warned that the Labor government’s Aboriginal Heritage Reforms could undermine private property rights in the region. Mr Pasin claimed the reforms would force property owners to undergo expensive mandatory cultural surveys for basic activities such as mending fences or planting trees.
Unfunded concept design includes Pipidinny Rd intersection
A concept design to extend the dual carriageway of Wanneroo Rd to include the Pipidinny Rd intersection has been completed, according to Main Roads WA. “Main Roads completed a concept design for the extension of the dual carriageway of Wanneroo Rd just south of Bernard Rd North to just north of Pipidinny Rd in 2021 however, this is not currently funded for construction,’’ a Main Roads spokesperson said.
Trainer’s fall from a horse results in a fractured pelvis
Muchea trainer Alan Mathews’ fall from an unraced horse resulted in an operation and a short stint in rehabilitation ... Mathews, who has won six Perth Cups, said the accident that put him in hospital was a fall from a horse that wasn’t even going fast.
Fire management in WA: The Bushfire Front responds to EPA Report 1745
Claims that prescribed burning will not assist with wildfire control are spurious. ... The EPA report on their review of the FMP failed to mention that a West Australian Parliamentary Committee, after hearing multiple evidence, recently concluded that an additional review of prescribed burning practices by Government was NOT warranted. This is a blatant and serious omission.
The politics of heritage are still a worry
You are all aware that the new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 (WA) is still in force, at least I hope you are, as nothing has gone through Parliament yet to reverse it ... The problem is the new Act is still live and could remain so well into next year if the State government runs into problems with its amendments with an Opposition that has woken up to the politics of the issue.
Holiday homes ‘not to blame’
Serena Kirby. Private homes rented as holiday accommodation are not the cause of Denmark’s housing shortage. The ï¬nding was revealed in Denmark Futures’ research over the past 18 months and presented at a community forum last month.
Community earns president’s praise
Patricia Gill. Shire president Ceinwen Gearon will resign after seven years in the job ï¬rm of the opinion that achievements over the time are not hers but the community’s. Dr Gearon says ‘her’ achievements have been a collaboration between the community, the Denmark Shire Council and Shire administration ofï¬cers.
EPA calls for burning enquiry
The Environmental Protection Authority has recommended an independent scientific enquiry into prescribed burning practices in WA, particularly in the context of climate change. EPA chair Professor Matthew Tonts said an independent review under the 1986 EPA Act would call on the expertise of independent scientists to consider prescribed burning approaches and implementation. This follows Fire and Air Forum: Biodiversity, Environmental Sustainability and Human Health at WA University in May.

Residents who successfully campaigned for heritage listing of King Neptune are calling for the spirit of Two Rocks and Atlantis to be retained … Two Rocks residents told Hannah Beazley, who is Parliamentary Secretary to Planning and Lands Minister John Carey, of their concerns the community could lose the public open space east of King Neptune if RAAFA WA is successful in having the public open space shifted.
