Georgetown trainer finishes 2021 on high note

This time last year, Athol Ryan was in hospital with severe facial injuries after an innocuous incident while preparing to gallop a horse at Mount Garnet ... “When you’ve got a horse like Macipenko it keeps you going,” he said of the horse that has now won four races this year. While seven winners might not seem like a lot, it’s not bad considering Ryan only has a few horses in work at any one time and has to travel more than 300km one-way for just about every race meeting.

Cups queen eyes Cooktown crown

Janel Ryan isn’t sure which horse will win the Cooktown Cup this year, but will take a three-pronged attack into the feature race in a bid to add another trophy to her growing collection. Janel and her husband Ronnie Ryan have won four Cups this year, securing the Atherton, Gordonvale and Cairns Cups, as well as the famous Banana Cup at Innisfail.

Dalgarno scores outstanding victory at Port on Sunday

After settling at the rear of the field and spotting the leaders many lengths down the back straight, Dalgarno stormed down the outside section of the straight to score a stunning win in the Stephen Cook Memorial Handicap at Port Macquarie ... On a day recognising three fine local racing personalities in the shape of Athol Platt, Col Foster and Stephen Cook, it was wonderful to see a famous set of colours pass the post in first place when Louise Day drove Lucky Sham to victory in race five.
