Youth crime crisis: Robbie Katter
The youth crime crisis has not only once again revealed the Queensland Labor Government’s ineffective way of dealing with a problem but also exposes their disregard to the regions ... the fact that it took a response for a murder in Brisbane, not the constant high levels of violence and off the charts levels of offences occurring in Mount Isa, Townsville and Cairns, to incite some sort of change, is disappointing.
Downs police targeting youth crime
More than 20 young people in the Darling Downs area have been charged during a special holiday crackdown to combat youth offending. Operation Theta commenced on December 19, 2022 to proactively tackle youth offending during the busy school holiday period. In the first two weeks of the operation, Darling Downs District officers conducted 665 proactive activities, including a high visibility police presence in hotspot youth crime locations, shopping centre and business walkthroughs.
Saving horses to save people
The wild Australian Brumby is seen by many as a threat to the native environment, especially in the Snowy Mountains, but horse trainer Joe Hughes has not only helped to solve the problem but in the process has saved the lives of people suffering the effects of trauma ... he now uses his unique 4BP horse training methods (4 Brumby Protection) to transform wild brumbies for a life working with people.
Feedback needed for policy on footpath trading
Southern Downs Regional Council's Regulatory Services Team is currently responsible for issuing approvals for various footpath trading activities ... interested in obtaining feedback from participants and/or clients of disability groups and agencies of service providers about what some of the issues/ concerns are that people with disability have with the current commercial use of footpaths in the region.

First Nations funding to look after Country: Scanlon
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon visited Maryborough on 17 January 2023 and said a record number of First Nations groups would share in funding of more than $1.5 million, from organisations on Mabuiag and Muralag Islands in the Torres Strait in the north, to near Birdsville in the west and Gatton in Southern Queensland.
As Coen receives a resupply, Council urges communities to ‘Get Ready!’
Cook Shire Council worked with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, local businesses and wholesale suppliers to coordinate delivery of essential supplies to the regional land-locked community of Coen, the Shire’s second largest township, and northern-most hub.
Upgrade works at Leslie Dam complete
Part of the Queensland Government's $19 million Southern Downs Drought Resilience program included upgrade works to the intake pump station at Leslie Dam. Water Minister Glenn Butcher said the upgrade work includes replacement of three 55-year-old pumps, pipework and the electrical switchboard.
Property offences at all-time high level
Local residents have unfortunately had to remain highly vigilant over the Christmas break as the chance of a thief breaking into a home looking to steal belongings and motor vehicles has been alarmingly high. Data that dates back to 2001 shows that in 2022 the Drayton Police Division ... had the most amount of unlawful entry offences on record. There were 234 unlawful offences recorded in 2022, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 161, set in 2021.
Cambooya now home to performing arts
Cambooya Hall is now the second venue to host classes by Kiyua, a not-for-profit organisation working with children and youth, building confidence and self-esteem through performing arts. Kiyua Kids come from all backgrounds and cultures and enjoy classes every Saturday during school term.
Allora Showgirl competition is back!
The call is out - The Allora Show Society is encouraging girls aged between 12 and 19 to enter the Allora Showgirl competition. This year there's been a change with no fundraising required.
Local police light up station in blue in honour of two fallen Qld officers
The Tennant Creek Police force put on a touching show of solidarity with their Queensland counterparts by lighting up the station with blue lights on Wednesday night to honour the two police offers who were tragically killed in the line of duty on 12 December. To coincide with the state service of Constable McCrow and Constable Arnold who were killed in an execution-style ambush at a remote Wieambilla property in Qld.

An insight into how Christmas in our region was celebrated in the past can be found in Steele Rudd’s On Our Selection, Chapter XXVI, which ends with this: “All night they danced—until the cocks crew—until the darkness gave way to the dawn—until the fowls left the roost and came round the door—until it was Christmas Day!”
Kialla recognised at national awards
Greenmount-based business Kialla Pure Foods has been awarded the Brand of the Year award at the 2022 Australian Organic Industry Awards ... Kialla’s flour mill is one of the last remaining in Australia which operates in the farmland where the grains are grown. “We’re proudly based in the heart of the Darling Downs, surrounded by the rich black alluvial soils that run through this region”: Quentin Kennedy.
Gladfield Driver Reviver may not close
Last Friday Member for Southern Downs James Lister MP and a group of concerned volunteers and media met at the Gladfield Driver Reviver site which was one of the sites due to be closed by the Department of Main Roads.
Railway Hotel celebrates 15 years
Congratulations to Robyn, Jan and the team who have made the Railway a popular meeting and eating place in Allora. A big cheer out to Rhonda and Red who have been with Robyn for the past 15 years. Great stuff!
