Publican waltzes into Jolly Swagman hotel
The Jolly Swagman Hotel Motel on the NSW and Queensland border is the latest regional venue to change hands. Affectionately known as ‘The Jolly’, the venue has been operated for over 20 years by local Jim Brown, who cited the buoyed market as the catalyst to sell the asset. More than $2 billion of hotels changed hands in 2021, and the market momentum has carried over into the new year.

The small regional community of Tantanoola in the South East of South Australia has big plans to move their almost one-million-dollar school gymnasium a few hundred metres across a couple of country roads to the town’s sporting complex. Local students were educated at the once vibrant school for 139 years but with recent declining numbers, the Education Minister John Gardner decided to close the school in 2020.

As well as calling for an evacuation plan, councillors Tiley and Clancy were concerned that managing stormwater during an extreme weather event, such as the recent Yamba flooding, would be more than the design could handle.
Farmers call for clear land use strategy
The state’s peak farming body is calling on the state government to clearly set out rules around productivity of agricultural land. NSW Farmers President James Jackson said increasing urban sprawl and new developments were eating away at the state’s farming land, which will ultimately reduce the amount of food we can grow.
Goldfields expands further in regional Victoria
Diversified national property development group Goldfields has snapped up three adjoining sites in Shepparton, as they continue to expand their residential platform in regional Victoria. The $15 million combined sites span 44-hectares and have been earmarked for development into a 450-lot strong masterplanned residential community, to meet increasing demand for affordable housing in the region.

Bramwell to remain open for tourists despite sale
Mark Knowles. The future of Bramwell Station’s famous tourist park and roadhouse is up in the air after the state government purchased the property last week. The two Cape York hot spots will remain open this year but their longer-term future could be on shaky ground.
Threeways Roadhouse hits the market
The Barkly’s iconic Threeways Roadhouse is up for sale. Calling for expressions of interest by Colliers, the roadhouse first sold fuel in the 1960s from a 44-gallon drum until Shell developed the present site including the roadhouse.

A constant stream of helicopters and ï¬re trucks drew many millions of litres from the dam. Once a controversial feature, the dam is said to have enabled dozens of properties to be saved.
Wyan sawmill sold, unlikely to operate again
The timber mill at Wyan has been sold. The Tarmac Sawmilling site on Tenterfield Rd went into liquidation last July and recently sold. The Tarmac Sawmilling Pty Ltd parent company is in South Australia and a staff member there said the mill was forced to close after the 2019 bushfires.
TSRA gives up control of Native Title in the Strait
Traditional Owners and Prescribed Body Corporates will take control in delivering all Native Title services in the Torres Strait from July 1 when Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council (GBK) is recognised as the Native Title service provider. The Torres Strait Regional Authority will cease being the Native Title Representative Body and stop providing Native Title services on June 30. Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt said it was the right time to transfer Native Title services.
Murdoch son-in-law buys cattle station with carbon potential
Rupert Murdoch’s son-in-law and former News Corp executive Alasdair MacLeod has emerged as the buyer Paradise Creek Station in Inverell, intending to take advantage of its carbon sequestration potential ... MacLeod’s Wilmot Cattle Company breeds beef cattle while also sequestering carbon in the soil at its properties. It sold $500,000 in soil carbon credits to Microsoft last year.

TagEnergy has signed on as an equity investor to the $3 billion Golden Plains Wind Farm project, which is set to become biggest wind farm in the country and the hemisphere. Set to be located on a 16,000-hectare site in Rokewood, 133km west of Melbourne and around 66km outside of Geelong, the project will be built over two stages and will include a 1,300MW windfarm, with 217 turbines and a 300MW big battery.

The freehold of the five-storey heritage-listed New Albury Hotel has been offered for sale with a long-term lease to Australia’s second-largest pub operator, Australian Venue Co, is the latest border town venue to hit the market.

Is this the future of Cape station?
With Queensland adding a new national park to its collection with the purchase of The Lakes, a former grazing property north of Hughenden, there are thoughts that Bramwell Station in Cape York could be the next in line. Last year, Bramwell Station was thought to have been sold to the state government for around $11.5 million, but the deal fell over at the eleventh hour as both parties did due diligence on the sale.

A massive, stunningly beautiful former grazing property will soon belong to Queenslanders as the state’s newest national park. “The Lakes”, north of Hughenden, will increase Queensland’s protected area estate by 35,300 hectares, with the Palaszczuk Government now finalising the multi-million-dollar purchase.
Castlemaine family loses everything
Kelly and Dustin’s rental property in Castlemaine became unliveable after the floods last Friday ... Many other locals and businesses in Castlemaine experienced loss and damage due to the severe weather front last Friday and local council has been working closely with affected residents and local emergency service team to assist.
Homestead in new hands/Dartmoor Homestead sold
Gabrielle Duykers. A 180-year-old homestead in the heart of Naracoorte will undergo repairs and a revamp before it begins its new life as a bed and breakfast. Dartmoor Homestead was built in four stages between 1842 and 1890. The three-acre property is home to Naracoorte’s first dwelling – a small cottage nestled behind the homestead – built by George Ormerod in 1840.
Work continues on storm recovery
Hepburn Shire Council is continuing to support recovery efforts in the community following a thunderstorm that damaged homes and property in and around Creswick and Clunes on 5 January. “The intensity of this storm caused widespread damage to homes, farms and public land in the west of our Shire. Our preliminary estimates are around $10m of damage to Council assets alone, and around $25m damage to crops” : Hepburn Shire Mayor, Cr Tim Drylie.
Anyinginyi angered by gym eviction
Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation is calling out the behaviour of the Barkly Regional Council (BRC) for the eviction of the Corporation from the Sport and Recreation Centre. The town’s sole gym was built by Anyinginyi, maintained and operated for two decades on Purkiss Reserve. Anyinginyi Board Chairperson Ross Williams said the actions of Council are a repudiation of the Barkly Regional Deal’s intent to work together, co-operatively in the interests of the community.
