What’s our strategy?
Future developments in the district must be thoughtfully planned with harmony, taste, and understanding, rather than solely focusing on “chasing rate dollars”. Housing crises affects businesses

Meet the moving church – one hundred years on
This story starts in about 1880 when the residents of the small rural community of East Laen, about 10km southwest of Donald, decided to build themselves a Methodist Church. Secure the food supply
All agricultural land in Victoria should be mapped and strategic land use planning established to protect farmland in major areas such as Gippsland, according to a landmark report by a Victorian parliamentary committee. This was one of 33 recommendations and 29 findings in a report ‘Securing Victoria’s Food Supply’ by the Legislative Assembly Environment and Planning Committee.

Local land value rise in region, up to 35.9 per cent for Balranald
Land values across Hay Shire have increased by 4.5 per cent residential and 6.3 per cent rural. The biggest rise in residential land value in the region is Balranald with a whopping 35.9 per cent while Carrathool Shire leads the way with 7.7 per cent in rural increases. Edward River came in at a 2.7 per cent rise for residential, 4.5 per cent commercial and 1.6 per cent rural.
Housing strategy
The Naracoorte Lucindale Council has developed a draft housing strategy with hopes to fix the district’s housing crisis. The draft strategy was presented to the council by chief executive officer Trevor Smart during the council’s November meeting. The draft housing strategy follows a resolution at the council’s May 2024 meeting to prepare position papers to assist the public to understand the council’s actions addressing the housing shortage in the council area and the assistance the council can provide.
No go for National Heritage Bid
An application to have Maldon listed on the National Heritage register has not been successful. Michele Waddington, owner of Fairbank House accommodation, completed the laborious application process and has been in discussions with heritage officers from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for over 12 months.

Kenbi Land Claim settlement finalised: Edgington
The Kenbi Land Claim – which has been running since 1979 – has been finalised. The Australian and Northern Territory governments have handed back the last parcels of land on the Cox Peninsula to the Kenbi Land Trust, and the Larrakia Development Corporation. Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Steve Edgington: “This historic moment is a tribute to the ongoing collaboration between the Northern Territory and Australian governments, the Northern Land Council, the Larrakia people and Traditional Owners to resolve complex issues."
