Help available to Northern farmers plagued by locusts
The NSW Government has responded quickly to reports of Australian Plague Locusts in the State’s north by providing free support and pesticides to landholders, and by establishing a central State Co-ordination Centre, Minister for Agriculture and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall announced today.

Horror rock-fishing tragedy at Port Kembla
On Friday 22 January at around 10pm, Surf Life Saving callout teams from the Illawarra joined other emergency services at Port Kembla where three people died after being washed into the surf. The deceased were three males who were believed to have been fishing off the rocks when five people were hit by a large wave.

Locusts continue to plague landholders in northern NSW
North West and Northern Tablelands Local Land Services urge landholders to be aware of Australian Plague Locusts, with recent favourable weather conditions resulting in nymphs hatching and progressing through their lifecycle. Local Land Services Biosecurity Officers have been issuing chemical to landholders who are now reporting banding locust nymphs in the Moree, Goondiwindi, North Star, Yetman and Warialda areas.

Fire makes mark on tree with map of Oz
When Graeme Reid was out fixing fences with his son from Cameron Reid Fencing, he came across a striking burn mark on a survey tree. "I grabbed my el cheapo phone and took a photo." There were people from National Parks and Department of Primary Industries who wanted a copy of the unusual photo, Graeme said. "It hits you in the eye straight away." The photo shows the number 36 - an old survey mark. Fires last year burned a map of Australia around the chiselled mark, even including Tassie and what looks like New Zealand, Graeme said.
