Special forum convened to address worsening mouse issue
The worsening mouse situation in some of Australia’s key cropping regions will be addressed at a specially convened online forum. With mice ravaging freshly planted summer crops in parts of northern New South Wales and Queensland and in large numbers elsewhere across eastern and southern states, concern is mounting about further impact to summer crops ahead of grain fill and harvest and the potential threat to the 2021 winter grain crop.
Liquid Fuel Security
The National Farmers' Federation considers that the current level of liquid fuel security in Australia is inadequate. The current arrangements for the sourcing and distribution of liquid fuel in Australia leave the agricultural industry vulnerable to a range of supply risks. The NFF considers that the Australian Government should take action to reduce this vulnerability.
On-farm water recovery continues despite Minister’s promises
The Victorian Farmers Federation is calling for the Commonwealth Minister for Water Resources to keep his word and stop on-farm water acquisition to meet the 450GL up-water target in addition to the Murray Darling Basin Plan. Australian agriculture looking to profitable year ahead – industry outlook
Australia’s agricultural sector is set to enjoy an overall profitable year ahead – underpinned by high commodity prices, positive seasonal conditions and low interest rates, and despite expected continuing trade tensions with China – according to a newly-released industry outlook.
Minimise the menu for mice
Grain growers in western Victoria are being urged to reduce available feed in the lead-up to sowing this season in a bid to help protect the 2021 seasons’ crops from mice. High yielding crops in the past two seasons in parts of the southern Mallee, Wimmera and Western District have created a bonanza for mice in some paddocks, according to Agriculture Victoria’s Heather Drendel.

Locusts continue to plague landholders in northern NSW
North West and Northern Tablelands Local Land Services urge landholders to be aware of Australian Plague Locusts, with recent favourable weather conditions resulting in nymphs hatching and progressing through their lifecycle. Where wild dogs roam
For 12 years Bella protected the Hessions' home. She'd see off the wild dogs that over the years Julie and John Hession saw and heard on their property at Sargents Rd near Cawongla. "She was fearless apart from thunder and lightning," John said. "If she heard the dogs at night, she'd howl back and make a circle around our property." Three weeks ago their kelpie cattle dog cross went missing.

Intensive farming is eating up the Australian continent – but there’s another way
Last week we learned woody vegetation in New South Wales is being cleared at more than double the rate of the previous decade – and agriculture was responsible for more than half the destruction.
