Five new state junior  surfing champions have been crowned in Geraldton over the  weekend, as the final event of the 2022 Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart, wrapped up yesterday in clean and contestable wavs at Back Beach.

Mount Rascal resident Tom Campbell is off to Perth this weekend as part of the Queensland Under 21 team to contest the National Under 21 Hockey Tournament. It’s a great feat for any local player to be included in a State team, but Tom’s selection is even more impressive when you consider that he is just 16 years of age. He is the youngest member of the Queensland team.

Serena Kirby. Denmark Senior High School students are making progress with the restoration of one of Denmark’s iconic wooden boats, Tiki. The restoration began last year after now-retired teacher, Pete Logan, suggested it as a project for the school’s recreational pursuits course.

Speaking on behalf of DEC, Murdoch University sustainability lecturer Nicole Hodgson says the high physical impact of building mountain bike trails is not compatible with sustaining the conservation and cultural values of a precious Class A Reserve.

A new project is underway to assist Western Australian sheep enterprises to adapt to a changing climate and build more resilient and sustainable businesses ... The three year project will assess the impact of projected climate scenarios for 2030 and 2050 on the productivity of key WA sheep producing regions, including Bruce Rock, Kojonup and Wagin.

Movement sensors used for human sleep assessments have been applied successfully to sheep to predict lambing dates and potentially enhance the precision of flock and farm management strategies. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) tested the sensors on 416 Merino ewes and nine rams during mating at its Katanning Research Station, as part of a collaborative trial with Murdoch University and Australian Wool Innovation.

Shadow Transport Minister, Shane Love, has called on Australia’s major airline to apologise to their WA customers after flights were cancelled across the state ... "this airline, which is borne of regional communities and the tyranny of distance, has shown little concern for the impact its mismanagement had on the regional families and businesses who rely on air travel to function,” he said.

Local Government Minister John Carey has announced the final package of reforms to the Local Government Act 1995, following a review of public submissions. The reforms are based on the findings and recommendations of a number of reports and consultation undertaken over the past five years, and represent the most significant change to local government in Western Australia since the Local Government Act 1995 was introduced more than 25 years ago.

Shire of Ashburton residents can now take advantage of capped airfares travelling to and from Perth from July 1, 2022. The first scheme of its kind to be implemented in Australia, the WA State Government has committed $19.8 million to deliver the capped airfare scheme over the next three years.

Shire of Gingin residents disappointed with the council’s decision to not re-establish a working group to undertake a review of the Upper Coastal sporting facilities master plan say they are now looking at the options available to them. A petition with 376 signatures was presented to the council and 21 people including Lancelin Community and Sporting Club president Norm Skoglund as well as golf, bowling, hockey and netball representatives attended the shire’s June 21 ordinary meeting in the hope councillor Frank Peczka’s motion on the issue would be successful.

The Denmark Men’s Shed will hold an information evening on Thursday, July 7 to gauge the interest in setting up and supporting a women’s group or hub at the shed ... The meeting will be aimed at women who may be interested in doing or learning how to do some woodwork and how to use common, or less common, tools and machines.

Patricia Gill. A bird sanctuary will be established north of a temporary fence in Wilson Inlet ... The sanctuary comes into effect on July 14 and is important to protect migratory shore birds ... Microlight pilot Milly Formby from Newcastle, NSW, is circumnavigating Australia to advocate for shorebirds that migrate to Australia from the Siberian Arctic.

Two new walk trails offering an eco tourism experience have been launched in Denmark in time for the winter holidays. Plaques installed at the Denmark River mouth and Lights Beach lookout feature a QR code linked to the Waterways website, and a wealth of local stories designed to enrich the visitor experience.
