Cross Border commissioner role questioned
Gabrielle Duykers. As the appointment of a cross-border commissioner edges closer, community advocates are hoping the new officer will be accessible and provide a voice for locals. Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven has introduced the Cross-Border Commissioner Bill – a key election promise from the SA Labor Party – setting the foundation for appointing someone to the position.
Eagle takes flight

Neil’s involvement in water policy started in the early 60s, the group that formed was the Murray Valley Water Diverters, which covered from Albury right up to the Menindee system. From the outset, Neil was the secretary of that organisation, a role that continued for 30 years before becoming chairman, continuing to advocate for sensible water policy and a fair go.
Farmers take back control with a digital first
Farmer-owned environmental goods and services broker Regen Farmers Mutual is set to launch their digital platform this week, as the first of 400 farmers on a growing waitlist take up the service. RFM’s farmer members will have access to a customised ‘digital twin’ of their farms which can be used to assess their green credentials and the environmental value of their property.

Wellington Shire Council opens up land to address housing shortage
Council took the first step to address Wellington’s acute housing shortage, paving the way to facilitate the development of around 1600 new housing lots. Four planning decisions were supported by Council, which will allow major housing developments to progress in Wurruk, north Sale and Longford.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has launched its state election platform ahead of this year’s poll in November ... Emma Germano said the commitments being sought as part of the VFF’s Fair Go For Regional Victoria campaign includes critical investment into regional road and rail, housing, healthcare, biosecurity, jobs and environmental management amongst a host of others.

Residents near Cairn Curran breathe a sigh of relief
Residents living around Victorian waterways are breathing a sigh of relief. June 13 was the final day of the state’s three month ‘recreational’ native waterbird shoot ... Shooting was reported to have started half an hour before the legal start time on day one, upsetting children, animals and visitors for three months since. "It finished with shooting on the final day in one of the thickest fogs we’ve ever seen."
Victorian Government bans game meat sharing
As the cost of living dramatically rises, the tradition of sharing game meat could now cost individuals over $18,000 after the Victorian Labor Government’s Agriculture Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 passed both houses of parliament. A second offence could see a $90,870 fine and/or 24 months in prison. The tradition of hunters sharing kills with friends and neighbours is as old as humanity itself, now the ever encroaching government bureaucracy will see the practice outlawed.

Community discussion has centred on the concern for the safety of the town’s youth who will seek out local alternative swimming locations such as creeks and channels, lack of leisure opportunities (including the water slide), lack of, or reduction of, swimming lessons and other organised aquatic-based lessons, and the cost of travelling to other towns or shires to access aquatic facilities.
Vinnies helper for 50 Years
Kristin Nicholson. 50 years is an impressive length of time to be associated with one organisation. That's how long Barham’s Phil Mertz has been involved with the St Vincent de Paul Society, better known as Vinnies. Last month, Phil was recognised for his years of service. Phil began his association with Vinnies in the 1960s when he lived and worked at Hay.
Golden Tag fish still up for grabs at Kings Billabong
Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne visited the waterway, which has been stocked with tagged silver perch, golden perch and Murray cod many of which are still uncaught. The Golden Tag competition commenced in February 2020 to encourage people to get out on the water and wet a line in their favourite spot, as well as boost recreational fishing tourism.

Upgrade works complete on three freight lines
Freight operators and farmers will benefit from the completion of upgrade works on three freight lines in north-west Victoria. Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said the works have been carried out on the Mildura, Sea Lake and Manangatang lines to improve the condition of the track and reduce the risk of infrastructure faults which can delay grain loading.
Regional Community Vet Clinic neuters 31 cats on inaugural de-sexing day
In an ambitious endeavour, a group of Central Victorian residents have come together to establish a Regional Community Vet Clinic (RCVC). The goal of this clinic is to support people who are experiencing dire financial situations to care for their companion animals, to run neutering programs and to support and promote the value of companion animals in the community.
Maldonites are Maldon’s biggest asset

This Sunday will see another Maldon Swap Meet held at the Maldon Racecourse Reserve; the resurgence of events post COVID speaks volumes for the resilience and dedication of Maldon’s army of organisers and volunteers. A lot of rural and regional towns are very busy trying to pick up the pieces of their event industries after the wilderness years of COVID, but Maldon has managed to keep all of their events ticking over during the last two years, in one form or another, even if they were just on life support.
Clancy of the classical guitar
If it wasn’t for COVID, the new young star of the classical guitar, Clancy McLeod, would not be playing in Australia. Clancy had been carving out his career in the UK, a long way from his parents’ home in Maldon. But unable to keep touring in Europe, he returned to Maldon and put in a lot of COVID enforced practice hours. The practice paid off with prize wins in the prestigious Adelaide International Guitar Competition and the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition.
