We won’t give up

Naracoorte based radiotherapy working group chairman Lachlan Haynes has vowed “we won’t give up” following a $110,000 feasibility study rejecting South East radiation services. Meanwhile, the $243million Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) is aiming to spend $4.3 million of federal funding for radiation services on a Cancer Consult Suite at the Mount Gambier Hospital.

New advantage program for SA’s eID roll out: Scriven

South Australian producers of sheep and farmed goats and the broader supply chain  will benefit from a new electronic identification (eID) implementation program to  prepare for the traceability system that becomes mandatory from 1 January 2025. A further $900,000 in funding is being provided to establish the eID Advantage  Program to improve producer knowledge and understanding of changed  responsibilities under the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).

National Livestock Identification System a policy of inequity for SA farmers: Centofanti

The SA Cattle Industry Fund has announced its intention to withdraw funding for the Malinauskas Labor Government’s National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) cattle compliance program, after revelations not all states are contributing equally. Minister for Primary Industries, Clare Scriven, has reportedly pleaded for the decision to be reversed.

Liberal Party discuss plan for wine industry support – understand and listen

Barker MP Tony Pasin last week toured Angove Family Winemakers, in Renmark, with federal opposition spokesperson for trade and tourism, Kevin Hogan, and Riverland-based MLC, and opposition spokesperson for regional South Australia, Nicola Centofanti.

‘Getting worse and people don’t realise’

Local individuals and families are among South Australians increasingly at risk of struggling with homelessness, due to cost-of-living pressures and low housing availability.

CFS answers the US call: Cregan

A team of CFS volunteers and staff are heading to the United States this morning, ready to assist with dozens of wildfires burning across the country’s west. The eight-member SA deployment will travel to Boise, Idaho, to help fight major fires in the Pacific Northwest, across the states of Oregon and Washington.

Firefighter on US rescue mission

Joanna Tucker. Kadina CFS volunteer Justin Baxter is flying to the US this week to help fight some of the 85 wildfires burning across the country, following an SOS call put out by officials. The Moonta Bay resident ... is scheduled to reach the state of Idaho ... to start his mission, along with eight more South Australians and a host of other Australian firefighters ... Mr Baxter said he had undergone an intensive training program to be ready for the 40-day deployment.

Tourism cruises in

Sarah Herrmann. More regular cruise ships are set to return to Yorke Peninsula waters this year, with hopes high that passenger numbers can eventually reach those of pre-pandemic levels. Travellers from three Coral Adventurer ships, which carry a maximum of 120 passengers each, are expected to be "tendered in" to Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park as part of a "wild islands of South Australia" itinerary — meaning the ships anchor offshore and passengers are brought in on smaller boats.

Horror pictures up there on big screen

Joanna Tucker. Wallaroo artist Debbie Seater is branching out into horror movies. The reigning Kernewek Lowender Art Prize winner has supplied works for a new film by director Simon Tait, which is being produced in Adelaide and is slated for international release.

Lucky escape

It was a lucky escape for a truck driver in Frances, outside of Naracoorte. This after the truck he was driving, loaded with hay, caught fire on July 25. According to the Country Fire Service (CFS) 17 firefighters on four CFS trucks had to attend the tray-top truck fire.

SAL celebrates 40 years

Under current ownership, the company is now one of the larger independent operators of its type in South Australia, employing 50 people State-wide, including almost 30 livestock agents and a strong real estate network.

Leadership woes

SA Liberal leader David Speirs has cancelled plans to return to Scotland for another family wedding. But speculation continues as the State Government urges a leadership challenge ... claims Mr Speirs had issued an ultimatum to his colleagues, urging them to mount a challenge to his leadership.

Meeting next week for Morant proposal

Hugh Schuitemaker. Renmark Paringa Council and the local RSL are in favour of an idea to honour an iconic Australian military figure with connections to the Riverland. A meeting will be held by Adelaide City Council on Tuesday to discuss a proposal of adding Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant’s name to the state heritage-listed Boer War Memorial.

Bird (flu) is the word

Hugh Schuitemaker. A Senior Riverland politician says the State Government needs increased preparation against potential bird flu outbreaks in South Australia. Riverland-based MLC, and opposition spokesperson for regional SA, Nicola Centofanti has claimed documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request revealed "no official correspondence" between Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven and the state’s chief veterinary officer (CVO) regarding the threat of H7 HPAI bird flu between May and July.

Sebastian’s flying high in the Riverland

My ride was on a small Jabiru light aircraft, Alex’s personal aircraft, which is perfect for basic aeronautics training, since it’s manoeuvrable but powerful enough to carry two people.
