Renmark Paringa Council and the local RSL are in favour of an idea to honour an iconic Australian military figure with connections to the Riverland.
A meeting will be held by Adelaide City Council on Tuesday to discuss a proposal of adding Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant’s name to the state heritage-listed Boer War Memorial.
Renmark RSL member Peter Higgs said the group had provided support toward the proposal.
A letter from Renmark Paringa Mayor Peter Hunter, dated 15 May, also indicated council was also supportive of the idea.
“His service was unblemished, he was commended by his commanding officer and promoted to Sergeant,” the letter read.
“We sincerely hope that you can bring this unfortunate chapter to a speedy and humane conclusion, as the relatives of Morant have been denied this consideration for far too long.”
It is understood the installation of a interpretive plaque next to the memorial, describing South Australia’s history in the conflict, and Mr Morant’s involvement, has also been approved.
‘Breaker’ Morant had previously resided around Renmark before his service in the Boer War.
Military lawyer James Unkles said “Morant’s contribution to South Australia prior to serving in the Boer war was exemplary”.
