Riverlanders compete in the National Drivers Championships at Yarrawonga

Lachlan Dand. Following the success of the 2024 Australian BAD Boat Championships, in conjunction with the upcoming 2026 event, Riverland Powerboat Club members last week competed in national championships in Victoria. Held at Yarrawonga, three members of the club competed in the EC Griffith Cup weekend, with Daniel Jury finishing second in the 105 mp/h championship.

ANZAC coverage on Yorke Peninsula

Trevor Clerke. The alarm went off early on Friday, April 25, and another ANZAC Day was underway for the volunteers and members of the RSL Port Vincent sub-branch. After a quick coffee, it was time to start dropping off flags at their locations, delivering raffle prizes to the clubrooms, and heading down to the memorial.

Sarah Herrmann. Shark sightings close to the shores of numerous South Australian beaches have prompted the SA Government to extend aerial shark patrols — but Yorke Peninsula is not included ... Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA told the YP Country Times on April 24 it was aware of community concerns about sightings across the state, including on YP.

Community healthcare concerns

The community has called for better access to specialist healthcare services and further development of local health infrastructure within the district. This was strongly voiced during the Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) public consultation for the development of the clinical services plan ... The goal of the consultation was to engage the community in identifying what matters most in advancing local healthcare services.

“Poppy Girls” heartfelt tribute

If you haven’t had the chance to visit the poppy installation at Naracoorte Town Square, you’re truly missing a stunning display of craftsmanship. This powerful tribute, featuring around 1,500 hand-knitted poppies arranged on a five-by-five-metre net, was created by Naracoorte’s heartfelt group known as the “Poppy Girls” in honour of the courageous ANZAC soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom.

No heads up: Locals say toxic microalgae advice was too slow

Sarah Herrmann. Southern Yorke Peninsula residents have criticised the speed at which advice was provided to the public about the toxic microalgae bloom, which has been detected at Edithburgh and Coobowie, and caused dead marine life to wash up on numerous other SYP beaches.

Sunday festival to mark latest addition to silo art trail

The latest addition to the Riverland and Mallee's silo art trail will be celebrated with a special festival this weekend. Enliven Lameroo will be held in the town's main street this Sunday 27 April, from 11am to 3pm, coinciding with renowned overseas-based mural artist Sam 'Smug' Bates completing work on the western silo.

Foreshore blossoms for ANZAC tribute

Port Broughton's foreshore has once again transformed into a sea of red, with the Barunga West Council's annual Poppy Fields installation unveiled earlier than usual, to coincide with the Easter holidays. Now in its third year, the display was initiated by Mayor Leonie Kerley in 2023 and features 1232 handmade poppies affixed to crosses — a striking tribute to Australians who served and sacrificed.

Big Ride 25

Last Saturday a dedicated group of jet skiers called Barham home for the night as they made their way from Albury to Goolwa in South Australia to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Dubbed the Big Ride 25 it is also hoping to create greater awareness of the disease.
