The Hon. Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development (SA), Media Release, 8 June 2025

More than 200 tonnes of donated hay will be delivered to farmers on the Fleurieu Peninsula this long weekend, as part of the Malinauskas Government’s $73 million Drought Support Package.

Charitable organisation Need for Feed is working with local Lions Clubs in Goolwa, Victor Harbor and Port Elliot to deliver about 10 truckloads of hay to 16 registered primary producers across the Fleurieu on Monday 9 June.

The hay run is being supported by the State Government’s Drought Donated Fodder Transport Assistance Scheme, which helps charitable organisations with their transport costs to deliver donated fodder to farmers who need assistance to feed their livestock.

The State Government has allocated $6 million in funding to the fodder transport scheme, which has seen thousands of tonnes of hay delivered to farmers across the state, including 1500 bales of hay delivered to Jamestown by the Rapid Relief Team last week.

The local Lions Clubs have also organised a drought breakers dinner and farmer support charity auction for this Sunday at the Encounter Bay Football Club to welcome the trucks.

The State Government is actively working with Need for Feed, Rural Aid, Rapid Relief Team, Farmers Relief Agency, and new participant the SA Dairyfarmers’ Association, whose participation provides specific support to dairy farmers across South Australia.

Primary producers are encouraged to contact participating organisations directly to understand what types of fodder are available and to register their interest.

Quotes attributable to Clare Scriven

The State Government is committed to supporting primary producers and regional communities across the state through this challenging time with our comprehensive $73 million Drought Support Package.

The support package has been designed based on direct feedback from farmers and along with funding for donated fodder transport, offers financial assistance, health and wellbeing support and grants for community events which bring people together.

We are incredibly grateful for the work charity organisations, such as Need for Feed and the Lions Clubs are doing to help deliver donated hay and to bring people together in a wonderful demonstration of community spirit and support.

Quotes attributable to Graham Cockerell, Need for Feed founder

I am very proud of the contribution made by Need for Feed. It really is an expression of community spirit and providing this feed in partnership with the State Government and Lions Clubs has real impact.
