Karli’s involvement in community events and fundraising is impressive. Karil is part of the P&F Association executive at St Patrick’s School, Allora and is the driving force behind the P&F’s support of the St Patrick’s Parish annual fete.

New fish passage for Fitzroy Barrage thanks to Rookwood Weir: Butcher

The Rookwood Weir project is helping fish species move safely and more freely in the Lower Fitzroy River system. As part of the project’s environmental offset strategy, a $7 million fishway is to be added to the Fitzroy Barrage, located at Rockhampton, downstream of the weir.

Fact, fiction blend in novel based on the life of jockey Bill Smith

Mr Smith to you by Kerry Taylor is described as a novel based on the true story of Australian jockey Bill Smith – a life lived in secret and that’s pretty right, but there’s so much more to it. Bill Smith was a well-known jockey in the bush area of Queensland for many years in the 1940s and ‘50s. Although nicknamed “Girlie”, he was always thought to be a man until an admission to hospital when aged in his late seventies revealed the truth: Bill Smith was a woman.

Victorian takes Winton to Longreach trophy in 17 hours

One of the longest – and some say toughest – endurance rides in the country was revived this year as a one-off event to mark 100 years of Queensland's Country Women's Association and raise money for charity. The Winton to Longreach Endurance Ride, which was held from 1980 to 1988, covered 220km along the original Cobb and Co route between the two Queensland towns.

Mates helping mates

The Commonwealth fraternity lives on through our firefighters, with a contingent of Queensland fires including Steve Benecke from the Cambooya Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) recently travelling to Canada to assist in firefighting. In the 2019 ‘Black Summer’ bushfires that ravaged Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt region, Canadian firefighters were part of the international effort to control the blazes.

Exciting times ahead at Bracknell Lodge

After more than two and a half years since it was first applied for, Wyreema’s Bracknell Lodge can now become home to a horse equestrian arena after Toowoomba Regional Council gave its approval last week. Councillors had the final say at a special meeting held last Wednesday and gave their unanimous support for the development application.

Inquiry into copper and other metal thefts: D’Ath

There have been growing community concerns about the frequency of thefts of metals including copper from energy, communication and transport networks, as well as local schools, sporting clubs and other properties ... The inquiry will look at options for curbing the ability of criminals to dispose of, and profit from, the sale of stolen metal through the scrap metal industry.

Protea Place is open for service in Warwick

This week sees the opening of a wonderful Support Centre for Women. Located at 37 Guy Street Warwick Protea Place welcomes vulnerable women who may be experiencing homelessness or disadvantage. The focus of Protea Place Warwick is on delivering Dignity Services such as lunch, showers, laundry, clothing and toiletries along with information and referral where possible.

Signing off after 50 years!

On the 4th of September 1973, CA & VJ Willet were officially registered with the Electrical Contractors Association and so began 50 years of work for the local electrician. Colin commenced his electrical apprenticeship as a 14-year-old with the Southern Electrical Authority (now Ergon) working in Brisbane and Warwick.
