Bundaberg Regional Council, Media Release, 21 September 2023

Get ready to dust off those long-forgotten treasures and clear out the clutter because the national Garage Sale Trail is returning to the Bundaberg Region in November.

Bundaberg Regional Council is proud to be partnering with Garage Sale Trail in 2023, the nationwide community-based initiative which encourages friends and families to embrace sustainability, reduce waste and promote a culture of reuse and recycling.

Bundaberg Regional Council has registered the region to take part in the nationwide community-based initiative, which encourages friends and families to embrace sustainability, reduce waste, and promote a culture of reuse and recycling.

Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey said the event was a golden opportunity to declutter homes, find hidden gems and connect with others in the community, while making a difference for the future.

He said everyone had a responsibility to protect the environment and leave the planet in better natural health for future generations and a circular economy would play a critical role.

“Bundaberg Regional Council has committed to a region-wide target of achieving net zero carbon emissions,” he said.

“The Garage Sale Trail is not just about buying and selling.

“It’s about promoting sustainability, recycling, and bringing our community closer together.”

He said hosting a sale as part of the initiative was a win-win for everyone involved.

“Garage sales are more than just transactions – they’re opportunities to meet your neighbours and foster a stronger sense of community.

“It’s a chance to strike up conversations, share stories, and make new friends.

“Plus, you never know what treasures you might stumble upon.

“From vintage furniture to unique collectibles, the Garage Sale Trail is a haven for bargain hunters and collectors.”

Council’s Waste and Recycling portfolio spokesperson Cr Tanya McLoughlin said by taking part in the Garage Sale Trail the community would help to extend the life of household items and textiles, keeping them out of landfill.

“We’re very pleased to be a part of this wonderful community initiative which promotes reuse of valuable resources, helps residents to declutter and make some extra cash and inevitably reduces the amount of waste ending up in council landfills,” she said.

“By participating in the Garage Sale Trail, you’re contributing to a greener, more sustainable lifestyle, instead of sending items to landfills, you’re giving them a second chance.”

Cr McLoughlin said reducing the amount of waste in the Bundaberg Region was the key focus of Bundaberg Regional Council’s draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2023-2030 which is now open to consultation through a community survey.

The Garage Sale Trail will be held around Australia over two weekends, 11-12 and 18-19 November.
