Weir embraces new role as Speaker
Local Member for Condamine Pat Weir received glowing recommendations from his party’s leaders and the Opposition as he was declared Speaker of the 58th Parliament of Queensland last Tuesday without a contest. Being appointed as Speaker is not always smooth sailing, as former Premier and now Opposition Leader Steven Miles said in parliament, since 1908 there have been 22 contested ballots for Speaker and 19 uncontested.

Sniffer dogs search for fire ants in Kyogle region
The NSW Fire Ant Program is launching Operation Five Valleys in the Kyogle region in an effort to prevent the spread of fire ants. The fire ant team will use specially trained detection dogs and human surveillance teams to monitor identified high-risk sites.
2025 Australian of the Year for Queensland
Allora born and bred Geoffrey Smith, was named Queensland Australian of the Year at the recent awards ceremony held in Brisbane. Proud parents Debbie and Alan Smith said Geoffrey was born in 1989 and went to Allora Kindergarten, Allora Pre-School and Allora P-10 School until Year 7 when he moved to Toowoomba Grammar.
Total support for Matthew’s legacy
The remarkable achievements of 2024 Paris Olympian bronze medallist Matthew Denny will be celebrated with two significant legacy projects in Allora. The local community was invited to vote on two proposals. Naming the Allora Cricket Grounds discus ring after Matthew Denny, creating a walking path in Dalrymple Park, featuring markers that highlight the distance of the various records achieved by Matthew Denny.
School’s out for Allora’s Year 10
The Allora P-10 State School Awards Night was held on ... celebrating 157 years of local schooling. The evening recognised the sporting, cultural and academic achievements of students from Years 7-10 and graduation of the Year 10 cohort of 2024.
Suspected farm worker exploitation under investigation in Gatton
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) and Department of Home Affairs have joined forces under the Shadow Economy Taskforce to investigate labour hire providers suspected of unlawful conduct in the agriculture industry through surprise visits in the Gatton region in Southeast Queensland.

Power surge cause of water outage
The reason behind why Wyreema residents were faced with little or no water coming from their taps a few weeks ago has been revealed ... a large storm caused a power surge, with the Wyreema water tower perhaps even being struck by lightning. "That resulted in substantial damage to some of our most critical infrastructure that left almost 2,100 residents with either low or limited water supply," Mr Passier said.
Greenmount has wheely good time
Greenmount was the place to be last Saturday as those magnificent billy cart drivers and their rolling machines took on the Ramsay Street downhill course in front of a packed crowd who enjoyed every moment of juniors and seniors races. Drivers and their carts came from as far away as Byron Bay and the Gold Coast to participate in the Greenmount Billy Cart Challenge in a sure sign that this event is a winner for the town.

Agricultural producers on the inner Darling Downs are set to benefit from the new Agri-Connect Pilot Initiative that bridges the gap between employers and the skilled workforce they need, creating opportunities for the region’s producers and talent pool of skilled migrants living locally. The program has already been used by a business with a site at Cambooya ... Agri-Connect serves as a platform for employers and skilled migrants to engage with one another.
Sunshine Coast selected for new subsea cable landing point
In a major win for connectivity and economic growth, Sunshine Coast Council will partner with Google, NEXTDC and others on Australia Connect, an initiative to further the reach, reliability and resilience of digital connectivity in Australia and the Indo-Pacific. Australia Connect will deliver new subsea cable systems and build on the Pacific Connect initiative.
Carol Lyall, new show president
Allora Show Society loyalist Carol Lyall recently stepped forward to take on the President role of an organisation that can boast a presence in the Allora regional community since 1878. After excelling as Chief Horse Steward for two years, Carol added the Show Society Vice-President role to her resume last year.
Allora’s Heritage Weekend celebrates 30 years
As has been the case for over three decades, the 2025 Heritage Weekend will see all roads leading to Allora on the Australia Day weekend, 25 and 26 January with a stream of historical vehicles and machinery converging on the Allora township and picturesque Showgrounds ... Having been featured in British historical machinery magazines, the Allora Heritage Weekend can be said to be known internationally.
History of YoungCare in Queensland
Local identity Daphne Whatley attended a YoungCare function in Brisbane at the weekend, where she was guest speaker. Daphne has been involved in YoungCare since it started in Queensland 20 years ago. During that time Allora has been raising money for YoungCare.
Exploring our region’s historic churches
In our sister publication The Clifton Courier, over the past two weeks we have been exploring the history of local churches in the area and this week Greenmount’s very own St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is featured. St. Joseph’s, which sits in an elevated position overlooking the town on Warkon Street, was built in 1958.
Maybe it’s time for a revamp?
No doubt the signwriters at Toowoomba Regional Council are busy people - if you check around the Region you’ll notice there are thousands of signs for which the Council is responsible ... So it’s understandable that not every sign will get immediate attention when it becomes a bit dilapidated. However, this sign at Federation Park, Vale View is probably well overdue for an upgrade.
Brown wins Supercars Championship
Toowoomba’s Will Brown has taken out the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship with a win at the Adelaide 500. Brown said he couldn’t have been happier to finish off the year with a win. "I was pretty stoked to finish off the year with a win to be honest," Brown said.
