Sean Cunningham. Agvision Yanco took place last week to promote agricultural careers to hundreds of students from throughout the Riverina-Murray region. It is the biggest regional NSW interactive event which promotes careers in agriculture.

We had a great September meeting with good attendance. We enjoyed a lot of entries in competitions and a good trade table ... We finished our meeting with a kokedama (moss balls) workshop.

Andrew Mole. More than seven years of hard work is about to go live after the long-awaited Barham micro abattoir last week passed its audit for poultry processing with flying colours. The rubber stamp from the NSW Department of Primary Industries means the facility is licensed and ready to operate.

Sophie Baldwin. It is only 15 days until the curtain opens on the Golden Rivers Theatre Group’s spring production of The Emperor’s New Clothes. And it is going to be amazing according to performer and committee member Russ Allen.

As counting continues in the 2024 Local Government Elections first time candidate Cristie Yager had a clear lead in the initial count winning 13 of the 28 polling booths across the Clarence Valley ... Cristie Yager told the CV Independent she made an early declaration in February that she would be a candidate as she wanted to take an open approach and make her intentions publicly known as she worked toward polling day ... "Once I decided I would run for council I began to research," she said.

New candidate for Hay Shire Council, Will Miller is sitting comfortably in the lead with 331 First Preference Votes.  Outgoing mayor, Carol Oataway polled 296 votes and in third place is Martyn Quinn with 183 votes ... Eight councillors will be elected from the 10 candidates.  

Hay Magpies won Sunday’s Group 20 women’s tackle grand final, to secure their place in history as the first premiership team of the competition, and the first women’s tackle team from Hay to win a cup. After losing to Tullibidgeal Lakes United (TLU) Sharks in the first week of the finals, Hay caused an upset in the semis, beating Griffith Black and Whites to book the grand final berth.

Logging has been stopped by the NSW Forestry Corporation in a Clarence Valley state forest after eggs found in an endangered Coastal Emu nest hatched last week, prompting calls for a wider exclusion zone to protect the species ... The FCNSW spokesperson said SoS program team members have seen the male emu and the chicks in the state forest.

Bumble bees in Tasmania are being geared up with micro radio transmitters and cameras to help scientists uncover their environmental impact and crucial role in crop pollination. Delivered through Hort Innovation’s Frontiers investment program and led by Western Sydney University, the $3.3M initiative will produce a comprehensive large-scale study of the Buff-tailed Bumble bee.

The figures are in, and the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH) delivered the second highest amount of water for the environment on record, in 2023-24. The CEWH, Dr Simon Banks, said around 1800 gigalitres of commonwealth water for the environment had been used to maintain or improve conditions in river and wetland systems across the Murray–Darling Basin.

According to the Federal Member for Parkes Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has refused to attend the National Farmer Rally outside Parliament House, ignoring farmers who travelled from the Parkes electorate to plead with the Labor Government to stop its anti-farming agenda.

Terry Toohey’s family have been dairy farmers at Woodview, west of Casino since 1901. Back then a busy Bruxner Highway didn’t cut through the green paddocks and cows didn’t have to risk being hit by a car or truck ... The chance of that happening again has been dramatically reduced with the installation of signs with flashing lights when the cows cross the road twice a day.

Muralists are painting up a storm in Nimbin! Lora Flora has been panting rainforest images outside the new Youth Club room; Julie De Lorenzo, Jen Harkness and Gaia Heart are painting in the newly upgraded laneway next to the Bakery, with help from Nimbin Central students Maddie Wilson and Grace Adlington, using Council funding left over from the footpath upgrade.

Jens Roestel. Australia imports roughly 8,800 tonnes of honey per year ... When tested in a recent study about 18 per cent of honey found on Australian supermarket shelves showed signs of alterations ... companies spend a lot of time and effort to produce fake honey.

On Wednesday 21st August the community in North Lismore and beyond was hit with another wave of destruction and devastation as the house at 13 Wotherspoon Street was demolished without notification ... Luke had been given 12 months to organise the relocation of his beloved home and was looking at land in Tenterfield.

Ivanhoe is forming a car club, the Ivanhoe Historic Car Club. Founding members of the club are wanting to put the call out, for people to dust off their old vintage beauties sitting in their sheds, and join up.
