Strong field in council elections

Ten candidates will vie for a seat of eight on the new Hay Shire Council when voters go to the polls on Saturday, September 14. They are, in order of ballot: David Townsend, Martyn Quinn, Wil Miller, Steven Young, Carol Oataway, Lionel Garner, Darren Tapper, Paul Porter, John Perry and Geoff Chapman. Balranald Shire has 13 contestants in the first Local Government elections since the former Council was put under administration.

Riverland trailblazer and talent awarded

Though only in the second year of her hairdressing apprenticeship, Riverland talent, Maiya Rice, has taken definitive steps in the Australian hair industry. Earlier this year Ms Rice, apprentice of Berri Salon Jarahs Hair, was named the Regional Cut and Colour Winner at the 2024 CURATE Awards.

Governor’s visit

Last week, Her Excellency Professor, the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria, embarked on a regional visit across Hindmarsh and West Wimmera Shires. Brilliant Bluesfest’s 2025 curtain call

One of Australia’s longest running and most prestigious music festivals, the iconic Byron Bay Bluesfest will have its final curtain call at the 2025 festival. Since the first East Coast Annual Blues Festival in 1990, which was headlined by American performers Charlie Musselwhite and Canned Heat at the Byron Bay Arts Factory, Bluesfest has been held every year at Easter in the Byron Bay area, except for 2 years during the Covid pandemic.

Pet project: Hi-tech dog mannequin helping TAFE NSW Yallah students hone real-world skills

A hi-tech and eerily lifelike canine mannequin is giving aspiring veterinary nurses at TAFE NSW Yallah priceless hands-on experience. A state-of-the-art canine mannequin imported from the US recently arrived at the campus, allowing animal studies and vet nursing students to practice important clinical skills, such as intubating, CPR, bandaging, and even ear cleaning.

Health falling behind

Joanna Tucker. Yorke Peninsula hospitals are falling behind the community’s expectations. That’s the grim outlook from Member for Narungga, Fraser Ellis. "The government is there to serve the community, and currently, I don’t think any hospital on YP is providing the services the community expects," Mr Ellis said.

Landslip victims abandoned

The Community Disaster Action Group (CDAG) has called attention to the severe human cost of the NSW government’s lack of action on assistance for people whose properties have been affected by landslips. "... There’s not even a policy 2 ½ years on, yet hundreds of landslip-affected residents are still living in damaged homes or caravans or unable to return home," CDAG co-ordinator Chels Hood Withey said.

Farmer confusion reigns amidst green drought: VFF

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says farmers and regional communities are confused about whether they are eligible for drought assistance or where they can turn to for support as Victoria’s green drought lingers and farmers approach the critical spring growing season. VFF Vice-President Danyel Cucinotta said the confusion was adding to the burden faced by many farmers and is the driving force behind the VFF’s proposed Victorian Drought Resilience Program.

The Rural Doctors Association has joined calls for more funding and medical staff for Wallaroo hospital. RDA South Australia president Dr Bill Geyer said there were two major issues affecting the hospital. "Port Pirie seems to be favoured over Wallaroo Hospital, despite Wallaroo growing and Port Pirie shrinking," Dr Geyer said ...
