Fear for flooding – West Terrace residents call for stormwater maintenance
Will Hunter. Residents on West Terrace, Kadina, are pleading with Copper Coast Council for improvements to surrounding stormwater facilities before further rain. Two recent events, including almost 98 millimetres of rain in Kadina over four days at the start of December, have put residents on flood watch.

Naracoorte flood was a record rainfall event
Recent flash flooding in Naracoorte was the result of a new two-day rainfall record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The official two-day rainfall total in the 48 hours to 9am on November 25 was 117.8 mm. “(It) is not only a new November record, but also an annual record in the bureau observations at Naracoorte – current and former site – since 1884.”

China trade re-opens for Naracoorte abattoir: Champion, McBride
The South Australian Government welcomes the Chinese Government’s decision to lift suspensions on the Naracoorte abattoir – along with two other Australian facilities. Eased restrictions will enable the Teys Australia meat facility to recommence sending its products to China.
Happy 20th to The Living Murray program: MDBA
Basin states and the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) are jointly celebrating 20 years since the historic ‘first step’ decision to establish The Living Murray program. A forerunner of the 2012 Basin Plan, The Living Murray (TLM) program was initiated in response to compelling evidence of severe and long-term decline in the health of the Murray River system.
Primary phonics focus pays off
Will Hunter. Primary school students across the state have continued to show improvements in literacy, the 2023 phonics screening check found. Results from the check improved for the fifth consecutive year, with 65 per cent of year 1 students located in country regions meeting or exceeding expectations, meaning they correctly decoded 28 or more words out of 40.
Ackland sentenced – Former Kadina Memorial School teacher jailed for 14 years
Rhiannon Koch. Thomas Ackland was sentenced to 14 years in jail on 13 counts of aggravated communicating with the intention of making a child amenable to sexual activity and one of sexual abuse of a child, formerly known as maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child, in the District Court, Adelaide, on Friday, December 8. The charges, regarding children as young as 12 and up to and beyond 18, span from 2017 to just a week before his arrest in March 2021.
Roll up, roll up – More early childhood staff needed
Patrick Goldsmith. Although its opening may not be far away, the eagerly anticipated Minlaton Family Centre is in desperate need of already-qualified staff members. It is hoped staff orientation will begin in early January, and while several trainees have been put through their paces at its sister site in Maitland, only six diploma-qualified educators have been registered for Minlaton.
Lucindale Survivors survive and conquer Shitbox Rally

In November 2022, Shannon and Erin were handed the keys to the Autumn 2021 Shitbox Rally AU Falcon of local Lucindale Survivors Rohan Giles and Andrew Wilks, and began their fundraising campaign to get the face-lifted Sherlee the Shitbox off the Port Douglas start-line on October 13th 2023 for the Spring 2023 Rally, bound for Adelaide via Birdsville.
Draining red tape
Government red tape had to be addressed before Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross could take up his position as a local government representative on the SE Water Conservation and Drainage Board (SEWCDB). Operating under special legislation, the SEWCD Act mainly provides for the conservation and management of water and the prevention of flooding of rural land, among other things.
