NLC rules out $35m sports hub
A $35million sporting hub reliant on ratepayer cash has been officially ruled out by the Naracoorte-Lucindale Council. The council decided in its March meeting to handball the “project lead” back to the sporting clubs involved.
Coonawarra heralds a smashing vintage
The 2024 Coonawarra Vintage was declared open in smashing fashion ... with a crowd of over 60 people gathering at the iconic Coonawarra Siding to herald in the new season. The Vintage Launch Ceremony saw Coonawarra and district community members, wine industry stakeholders and dignitaries come together to acknowledge and celebrate this significant time in the region.
Still Water ‘Quince Fair’, Penola – open garden, 13-14 April
Di Michalk. Still Water is a beautiful, sprawling country garden built around towering natural red gums. Designed by Mary Skene-Kidman in 1959, the older parts of the garden strongly reflect her design, plant selections and colour schemes with Edna Walling influences at play in The Shrubbery.
Ssh! Secret meeting!
Last night ... a secret meeting regarding nursing services at Lucindale was scheduled to be held behind locked doors. Patients, public and the media were excluded from the private gathering in the town's rarely used council chamber. With an “invitation only” guest list which expanded from “a chosen few” to around 24 people, the meeting was organised by the $243 million Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN).
Voice reps elected
South Australia’s inaugural First Nations Voice to Parliament elections have been finalised after Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders took to the polls ... Voting was voluntary and only open to the state’s First Nations population ... There were 129 formal votes cast for the local candidates, the last elected member achieving the position with six first preference votes.
Power goes out with Easter
Sarah Herrmann. Moonta was hit by a particularly unfortunate power outage on Easter Monday ... while a large part of northern Yorke Peninsula was also off the grid ... with small hospitality businesses taking a hit ... Pasky Grab & Go Deli owner Sheree Moroney said the outage created ‘absolute chaos’ for her business.
Millions for local jetties
Patrick Goldsmith. Six Yorke Peninsula jetties ear-marked for repairs have been allocated a combined $4.18 million — the most of any region in the state — from the South Australian Government’s Jetties Renewal Program ... Within YPC’s pool of jetties, 85 per cent of piles in the Edithburgh jetty and 62 per cent in Ardrossan jetty are rated as having less than 25 per cent life left, while the Port Vincent Fisherman’s jetty collapsed into the water last year. YPC mayor Darren Braund reiterated how important jetties are to the appeal of the region.

I am not interested in being drawn into political games. That is how Member for Mackillop Nick McBride has retorted to allegations against him by Opposition and Liberal Party leader David Speirs of failing to stand up and deliver for the community.
Surveying past the icy pass
Wayne Hawthorne. It was interesting to hear that the South-East of South Australia was home for one of the great surveyors and explorers of Polar regions. The little-known exploits of John Rymill (1905-1698) were outlined to members of Naracoorte Men’s Probus Club recently.
Leader “Speirs” McBride
Skyrocketing costs of living, housing, workforce shortages, and healthcare—these issues roll off the tongue of Opposition and Liberal Party leader David Speirs. And with the state election more than two years away, Mr Speirs wants MacKillop back in the fold, claiming local MP Nick McBride “seems to have become Labor’s voice in the South East instead of standing up for what’s best for the region”.
Nurse Ali ‘saved my leg’
Lucindale's Cheryl “Fitzy” Fitzgerald has only praise for the Lucindale nurse who three years ago saved her leg, and possibly her life ... So Ms Fitzgerald was shocked recently when she tried to make an appointment for a blood test at Lucindale.
Labor and Greens lock out pastoralists from crucial board membership in low move: Centofanti
The Malinauskas Labor Government and Greens have joined forces to block pastoralists from making up 50 per cent of the Pastoral Board membership in a disgraceful move. The disappointing alliance gave Labor and the Greens power to vote down the crucial amendment to safeguard the Pastoral Lands Management and Conservation Act against hands-off land management.
Boaties sailing close to the wind
Shaun Hollis. One third of South Australian boats checked by marine authorities across the summer did not comply with safety regulations, seemingly throwing caution to the wind. Marine Safety SA conducted close to 2200 checks across the state in December, January and February, including more than 400 in Yorke Peninsula coastal waters.
Ramsey to call it quits
Following six election victories, nine years in government and countless hours driving around Australia’s third-biggest electorate, Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey has announced he will retire at the next election ... "This has not been an easy decision to make, as I still have unwavering enthusiasm for the job," Mr Ramsey said.
Mark’s artwork soars to new heights
Shaun Hollis. A decorated RAAF officer who commissioned a painting to commemorate the moment which inspired his naming of the iconic Boeing E-7A Wedgetail defence force aeroplane said he could not be happier with the result. The painting, by Minlaton artist Mark Short, depicts a wedge-tailed eagle taking flight.
Minister approves new koala management plan for timber plantations on KI: Close
Harvesting of Tasmanian blue gums on Kangaroo Island can now resume after the State Government approved a new koala management plan submitted by timber company, AAG Investment Management (AAGIM). Regulations introduced by the Government following the release of footage showing koalas being killed and injured within the plantations mean timber companies on the island cannot fell blue gum plantations without an approved koala management plan.

Ocean users cautioned
Ocean users in the South-East have been asked to exercise extra caution following the spread of abalone viral ganglioneuritis (AVG) in South Australian waters for the first time. The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) said AVG has been confirmed in wild abalone in waters south of Port MacDonnell, and restrictions are now in place from the Southend to the South Australian-Victorian border in the east.
