Allora residents want more from their Council
A Connecting with Council meeting hosted by Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) in Allora last Wednesday provided an opportunity for residents to speak their minds about issues important to them. Seven of the eight councillors, Mayor Vic Pennisi and a few SDRC officers were in attendance to speak about and listen to issues affecting the town.
New policing measures
Following a visit to Toowoomba last week by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, a raft of measures has been introduced that aim to combat crime. The community safety reforms, introduced to state Parliament last week, include extreme high-visibility police patrols becoming a permanent feature of policing in the Toowoomba region and the State Flying Squad being expanded and given a youth justice focus to tackle youth crime hot spots whenever and wherever they emerge.
First look at new school
Toowoomba Catholic Schools (TCS) has released the plans for its new school, St Francis Catholic College at Westbrook, and there’s an opportunity for locals to have a say on the project ... Covering nearly 10 hectares of land, TCS plans for the college to include educational, cultural and sporting facilities and to become a hub for community use outside of school hours.
Yet another Blue Tree
The Blue Tree Project is spreading like a weed through the eastern Downs, with yet another Blue Tree painted, this time at Deuchar ... The Blue Tree Project’s mission is to help raise awareness of mental health struggles by encouraging communication.
Plans for Allora’s two museums
A proposed development application was submitted to the Southern Downs Regional Council late last year by the Allora & District Historical Society, for the relocation of two buildings on the original museum site on Drayton Street to the site of the old Shire Hall on Warwick Street Allora.
Setting a course for plant knowledge: Cape York NRM
From plant structure and correct terminology to learning about the features of leaves, bark, fruit and flowers; a three-day plant identification course hosted by Cape York NRM provided new insights into the flora on Cape York Peninsula ... The main tool used was the Australian Tropical Rainforests Plants key (8th ed), developed at the Australian Tropical Herbarium by CSIRO.

Federal grant to fund koala conservation in Queensland: AWC
Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) has secured $179,211 in new federal funding to assist in a three-part Koala conservation project at Curramore and Mount Zero-Taravale Wildlife Sanctuaries in Queensland ... Tim White, AWC Chief Operations Officer, welcomed the grant, saying it will help improve habitat, data and knowledge on Koala populations at both sanctuaries.
Bridging the Gap under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan: Plibersek
The Government is beginning the process to buy water to Bridge the Gap under the Murray–Darling Basin Plan. These water purchases are voluntary. This water purchase is only for the remaining 49GL of the Bridging the Gap target. ‘Bridging the Gap’ is the largest pool of water to be recovered under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan – a total of 2,075GL. Around 49GL remains to be recovered: Tanya Plibersek.
Partnership expands iconic Gold Coast Hinterland national parks: Scanlon
Two of Queensland’s most popular national parks have expanded thanks to a partnership worth more than $600,000 between the Department of Environment and Science (DES) and the Foundation of National Parks and Wildlife (FNPW). More than 185 hectares of undisturbed forest habitat has been added to the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage listed Lamington and Main Range National Parks.
Notorious New England Highway corner scene of two truck collision
The New England Highway at Cambooya was the scene for a non-fatal two truck collision at 5.38am on Friday as a south-bound vehicle collided with a north-bound vehicle on the sweeping bend where the highway joins with the Greenmount Etonvale road.
Tighter leash on dog-accessible parks denied
A move proposed at a Toowoomba Regional Council meeting last week which would have seen dogs prohibited from 11 public parks was voted down by Councillors. In March 2022, Council considered a proposal to make changes to the Register - Prohibition and Restriction of Animals in Public Places through the inclusion of 11 additional bushland parks.

Following a recent audit conducted by the State Government into Aged Care food ratings, Southern Cross Care in Allora was awarded Second place in Queensland. This is no mean feat when 570 Homes across Queensland were judged by the residents and their families.
