Public health alert – Murray Valley encephalitis: NT Health
The Northern Territory (NT) is currently experiencing an outbreak of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE), with 7 confirmed cases this year, including 2 deaths. This is the highest number of cases ever recorded in a single year and compares to 2 cases over the previous 5 years across the Territory.

Atlas brings muscle to Australia’s clean energy future: King
An industry-led, wide-scale search through previously mined and discarded rock and earth could help boost Australia’s global position as a clean energy powerhouse ... Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Madeleine King said the new Atlas of Australian Mine Waste, could provide industry with additional opportunities to extract valuable resources from previously mined rock and earth.
Senator speaks on the “Voice”
Alison McEwen. Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Senator for NT, addressed the Victorian Nationals State Conference held in Creswick ... The attendees were interested to hear that it is estimated that large numbers of the population do want the indigenous First Nations people to be included in the Preamble of the Constitution! This statement coming from an indigenous Senator who is a member of the Nationals, who in turn are saying Vote No to the Voice, was a surprise. Jacinta said this is the most divisive referendum ever held.
Grant allows bush communities to care for own Country
Barkly Regional Deal Backbone Team has secured five tractor packages to improve services in the bush. The funding package from the Barkly Regional Deal Community Projects Fund will enable communities to look after their Country in a range of ways including slashing grass, building fire breaks, moving wrecked cars and rubbish to make their communities safer.
Anyinginyi promotes benefits of quitting smoking
The 31st May has been declared World No Tobacco Day and this year’s theme is "Grow food, not tobacco" in reference to the contribution that tobacco growing makes to food insecurity, according to the World Health Organization. Wednesday morning Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation took over Peko Park to educate the public to the consequences and dangers of smoking and offering strategies and support for those looking to try giving up.
Softball fever rolls into Tennant Creek
Pam Dillon. Students from schools across the Central Barkly Region converged into Tennant Creek for the annual Softball Inter-school Cup Championship. The girls aged from 10 to 15 enjoyed learning and developing their softball skills through skills sessions and playing games against each other.
Deadly Hair Dude opens salon in Tennant
There is no more excuse for split ends in Tennant Creek any more, with the new opening of the Deadly Hair Dude's new salon in town. Hairdresser Gary Strachan has been working hard with RN Employment to open the salon for two weeks each month both as a training opportunity for locals and a service to the community with the aim it will eventually become a sustainable local business.

Lia stressed the importance of speaking to people on the ground to better represent them.
Locals join in the Beanie Festival fun
After several workshops in Tennant Creek last week, felting tutor Tanya Hattingh returned to Alice with 30 beanies made by Tennant Creek residents for entry into the 2023 Beanie Festival ... The festival was organised to sell beanies crocheted by Aboriginal women in remote communities, and has grown into a fun event where Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists share their cultures and exhibit together.

New Alice film: Kindness triumphs over misery

The film maker is Penny McDonald and her co-producer is Audrey Napanangka, who also gives the new movie her name.
Local 8 ball legend recovers from vicious machete attack
Long-time local Damien Ha was in good spirits as he recovered from surgery after a vicious attack by a group of teenagers in the early hours ... "I get the stitches out in two weeks so I should be right to play." Damien has ranked four in the Territory for the Masters, and travels each year to represent Tennant in the Australian Titles. "I told them I know your face, and he told me he had a machete, grabbed it out of the bush and hit me with it."

In a social media post this week, Mr McAdam claimed BRC was suffering from 111 positions vacant ... In BRC’s media release on Wednesday, it was on a positive note about adopting a hire local policy which had reaped great results for its eight community service centres in the Barkly.
Barkly on top of NT Budget: Paech
Nyinkka Nyunyu is set for a $7 million upgrade, announced in this week’s Territory Budget ... Speaking to the Tennant & District Times, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech said works include a new artist studio, upgraded gallery, performance and storage spaces and immersive audio visual displays and experiences that share history, stories, arts and culture.
Racing fever at a high for tomorrow’s Two Cup Race Day
Trainers, horses and jockeys from far and wide will converge on the Barkly for the Tennant Turf Club’s annual Two Cup Race Day on Saturday ... Some six races make up the card, with the first race getting underway at 1.01pm, while the last of the half-dozen, the $30,000 Ladbrokes & Remote Concrete NT Tennant Creek Cup over 1600m, will jump at 4.06pm.
