The show must go on!

Recent stories

The Barkly community was up in arms earlier this week when news hit the Tennant Creek Show was cancelled just 25 days ahead of its arrival into town.

Due to failing infrastructure at the Showgrounds and a volunteer burnout, it was looking bleak for the one-day ahead to go about.

However, Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin as always managed to pull a rabbit out of his hat, going straight to the top to make sure it goes ahead.

Creating a working group with the Department of Chief Minister, Mayor Jeffrey has been in daily talks with Chief Minister Natasha Fyles to immediately work on a back-up plan.

“No matter what, the show will go ahead – even if it’s just a sideshow alley for kids and families to enjoy the rides, showbags and games,” he said.

“We just need to ensure we have a suitable site that is 100 per cent compliant and safe for the community.”

Mayor Jeffrey thanked the Tennant and Districts Show Society Committee who had worked hard under pressure to deliver the local annual event, and were crushed by recent condemning social media comments.

He urged community residents to get involved with volunteering at the Show, because it now just down to handful of dedicated locals to organise the large event and more hands on deck are always needed.

If you’re interested in volunteering to ensure the Show goes ahead or would like to hold a stall, register your interest by emailing barkly.cmc@nt.gov.au
