How the Mayor and his helpers saved Christmas

Santa Claus has been flat out this year preparing to fill the Christmas orders from all the well-behaved children around the globe, and urgently enlisted the help of the Mayor of the Barkly when trouble arose. Thousands of dollars of presents for this year’s 88th annual Tennant Creek Christmas Tree event were at risk of not arriving for the event due to freight issues.

Council back on track for a thriving 2023

As we head to the end of another year, 2023 will herald exciting times for the Barkly Regional Council (BRC), says CEO Emma Bradbury. After a tough year of staffing shortages and financial struggles, Ms Bradbury says Council has experienced a turnaround of its financial position to a new standing of excellence, with an external auditor citing BRC as one of the strongest in the NT.

Aboriginal-led NFP celebrates 10 years by gifting 3,000 children’s books to schools

To celebrate 10 years of delivering transformational change with Aboriginal children, families and communities, Moriarty Foundation has distributed 3,000 children’s books to 17 primary schools in remote and regional Aboriginal communities including Barkly schools in Tennant Creek, Mungkarta, Neutral Junction and Ti Tree. Moriarty Foundation delivers two well-known and highly regarded solutions to disparity, John Moriarty Football and Indi Kindi.

Willowra students enjoy two days of multi sports

Pam Dillon. Two days of various multi sports had the students laughing, smiling and shouting for joy. The sessions conducted were aimed at developing skills for different year levels ... Students in Years 4 to 6 worked focused on improving their skills and experimented with cricket and paddle tennis bats using various types of balls.

Charles Jangala Inkamala

Charles Jangala Inkamala was born 1968 in Ntaria (Hermannsburg) ... Charles lives in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and began painting with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in 2017. He paints significant cultural sites such as Rwetyepme (Mount Sonder) and Yapalpe (Glen Helen Gorge) in stylized detail.

Tenants urged to get ready for new public housing rent collection overhaul

The Territory Government is changing the way it collects rent for remote tenants in Tennant Creek and Barkly communities ... In rolling out the new framework, historical rental arrears accrued up until 11 December 2021 have been waived. Nearly $70 million in rent was not collected for more than 11 years, providing a major shortfall of reinvestment back into repairs and maintenance of public housing.

Mozzie Mob on the job to rid Tennant of the dengue mosquito

After recent rains in Tennant Creek, the Mozzie Mob is back to work under a renewed program to cleanse the town of the dengue mosquito. NT Health Director of Medical Entomology at the Centre for Disease Control, Nina Kurucz, said a fresh round of home backyard inspections will begin with technical officers in town to conduct inspections to prevent an outbreak.

Warumungu reps arrive in NZ for return of cultural heritage material

Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation. Warumungu representatives Jimmy Frank Jnr and Laurence Williams met with Māori delegates in Aotearoa on Tuesday for the repatriation of priceless Warumungu cultural materials. The important objects, which had long ago been sent to New Zealand, were from the collection of obtained by anthropologists Spencer and Gillen during the time they spent with the Warumungu people in early 1900s.

Lions Club celebrates 55-year anniversary

The Tennant Creek Lions Club celebrated its 55th anniversary with a stunning sunset dinner on Saturday evening. The first ever Australian Lions Club was formed in Lismore in 1947, with the Tennant Creek branch forming two decades later.

Western Arrernte curator joins National Aboriginal Art Gallery team: Paech

An emerging Aboriginal curator will lend her expertise to the National Aboriginal Art Gallery project in Alice Springs. West Arrernte woman Marisa Maher will provide advice about First Nations collections held across the country, as well as informing the early stages of an exhibition strategy.

Guava Root-Knot Nematode detected in the Top End: NT Gov’t

A highly pathogenic and aggressive round worm which affects the crop yield of several vegetables, fruit and agricultural fibres has been detected in the Top End. Meloidogyne enterolobii, known as Guava Root-Knot Nematode, has been detected in four premises in Middle Point, Jingili, Palmerston and Malak.

Remote students improve their swimming skills

Pam Dillon. Twenty-eight students from three different remote schools spent three days fine-tuning their swimming skills to improve their schools’ chances in the Barkly Region Inter-school Swimming Carnival. With the help from Swimming NT, Royal Lifesaving NT (RLSNT) and the Barkly Sport Education Coordinator, the students ranging from preschool through to Year 8 were put into groups according to their swimming ability.

New evening experiences for tourists coming soon: Manison 

Four tourism operators across the Northern Territory are creating new evening experiences for visitors, to enhance their attractions and encourage more tourists to visit the NT ... “These new evening experiences enhance our tourism offerings in the NT, which in turn helps to generate positive reviews and attract more visitors to explore our regions"; Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Nicole Manison

Local businesses tired of waiting to get paid by mining company

The first shipment of magnetite from the revitalised Peko Rehabilitation Project was heralded by media across the Territory but the news didn’t go down well with Tennant Creek locals. The announcement angered local businesses after the good news coverage of Elmore Limited’s maiden shipment because they are waiting to get paid for services provided to the company.

Federal Minister talks with locals at skills and jobs forum

Federal Minister for Skills and Training Brendan O’Connor visited Tennant Creek last week to meet local employers, service providers and learners at a jobs and skills forum. The forum was hosted by Member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour and Charles Darwin University.
