Buffel grass declared a weed
Buffel grass has been declared a weed and a management plan will now be formalised towards reducing its impact in Central Australia, according to Environment Minister Kate Worden ... The Arid Lands Environment Centre says it welcomes "this historic decision" following "a decades long struggle to confront one of the greatest threats to the arid and semiarid lands."

The Lawler Labor Government has declared buffel grass a weed and will now move towards reducing its impact in Central Australia by formalising a weed management plan. The recommendation to make the declaration under the Weeds Management Act 2001 was informed by the work of both the Technical Working Group, and the Buffel Grass Management Strategy 2024-2030, as developed by the Buffel Grass Weed Advisory Committee.
Territory Day celebrations light up Karguru
On a chilly Monday night, residents from near and far flocked to Karguru in anticipation of a spectacular celebration marking 46 years of Northern Territory self-government. Hosted by the dynamic duo of Barkly Regional Arts and Winanjjikari Music Centre, the festivities promised a night to remember.
Canteen Creek celebrates 40 years
It has been 40 years since the small Barkly community of Canteen Creek was established and the residents are in celebration mode. Set on Alyawarr land around 180 km southeast of Tennant Creek, Canteen Creek was established by Raymond Butcher Mick who wanted to move his family from town back to the bush to develop a strong connection to the land.

Government drops Henley on Todd
The NT Government has reduced its minor subsidy for the iconic tourist attraction Henley on Todd to an extent where the event cannot take place this year, according to MLA for Braitling, Josh Burgoyne ... “The dry river boat races have been occurring in Alice Springs since the 1960s with locals and tourists racing against one another.”

Investigation reveals Westpac’s serious breaches of banking code of practice in closing Tennant branch
After a thorough investigation, the Banking Code Compliance Committee (BCCC) has found that Westpac breached its obligations under the Banking Code of Practice over its handling of its Tennant Creek branch closure in September 2022. The BCCC has determined that Westpac failed to comply with the ABA Branch Closure Protocol and did not provide adequate support to affected customers in the remote Tennant Creek community during the transition period.

Tennant Creek Transport ceases operations, citing insurmountable challenges
The Board of Tennant Creek Transport announced this week that all their services, including the door-to-door service, town bus, and the Greyhound Connect service, will cease operations effective from Sunday. Despite being financially stable, the service has encountered persistent issues that finally rendered its continuation impossible, chiefly the ongoing struggle to recruit and retain an adequate number of drivers.

Man sentenced after pleading guilty to causing a bushfire
A Territory man who pleaded guilty in the NT Supreme Court to illegally starting a fire at Djukbinj National Park 2 years ago has today received a 6-month suspended sentence. Djukbinj National Park is a wetland of national significance ... “The resulting wildfire burned for 11 days, burning a total of 166 square kilometres, including 2300 hectares of pasture on an adjoining pastoral station ..."
Residential youth justice facility set to open
The first Residential Youth Justice Facility in Tennant Creek is set to open this week. The facility, located in Juno about seven kilometres east of the town, will be able to accommodate up to six youth involved in the justice system until a purpose-built facility is completed.
Barkly Regional Council members dismissed, new era set to begin
After yesterday’s official dismissal of the members of Barkly Regional Council, Local Government Minister Chansey Paech has stated it was not a decision he took lightly. Minister Paech says, however, that it was necessary to ensure the effective operation of BRC for the region’s community.

Manhunt for domestic violence offender ends in arrest
Tennant Creek police arrested a man in connection with a serious domestic violence incident in Tennant Creek ... a woman was assaulted with a broken bottle at a local service station between Williams Street and the Stuart Highway. The victim was rushed to Tennant Creek Hospital with serious facial injuries.
Police seize 3.6kg of cannabis in remote drug raid
A man has been charged by the local police for involvement in illegal drug activities in the Tennant Creek region ... A drug detection dog named Callen assisted in locating a commercial quantity of cannabis buried under spinifex bushes in the surrounding area.

NT company Sitzler has been awarded the tender to construct the National Aboriginal Art Gallery. Site preparation and first stage construction works are set to rollout in the coming weeks, according to a government media release.
