At long last: Mapoon church opened after years of lobbying
The spirit of Mapoon’s old people could be felt as the community opened its long-awaited church last Thursday. In an emotional ceremony, community leaders spoke of the long battle to have a church built in Mapoon after the state government ripped down the last one in 1963 when it forced all residents to leave the Mission.
Cattle property helping girls’ growth
A pilot program for teenager girls that focused on developing confidence, self esteem and self development has been hailed as a success. Over the course of the year, 47 girls from Napranum visited Wolverton Station, usually in groups of eight, for three days of activities on the working cattle property.
2021 Population Statement
The 2021 Population Statement looks at population change over the past year and includes projections of the population over the next decade. It describes and analyses the role of the different drivers of population change – overseas migration, natural increase and internal migration. The analysis spans states and territories, capital cities and rest of state areas, age and gender.

Scientists are checking birds’ regurgitated ‘pellets’ for bee wings in the latest efforts to protect Australian bee populations from threats. The work – which takes place in the Northern Territory, Brisbane and Townsville – involves teams locating Rainbow Bee-eaters, who typically roost in large numbers at the same sites each night, between March and November each year.
Human rights award for respected Barkly Elder
A well-respected Warumungu elder was bestowed the Fitzgerald Justice Award in the 2021 Northern Territory Human Rights Awards recently. John Fitz Jakamarra was nominated for his dedication to being a community mentor to the welfare, wellbeing and reintegration of local people in the Barkly community ... An NT Shelter spokesperson said John is committed to supporting to those who have been impacted or at risk of being impacted by the justice system.

For everyone in the Katherine and Big Rivers region the CHO has given us all clear messages – get vaccinated; use the Territory Check In App; if you feel no good, stay away from work and other people and get tested for COVID-19; wash your hands and use hand sanitiser regularly and maintain social distancing where possible.
Millicent Saleyards saved by community

Faced with powerful deputations from members of the community at the Special Council meeting on Tuesday 30th November 2021, Wattle Range Council moved a motion to keep the Millicent Saleyards open. The vote was unanimous. The Special Council meeting was scheduled to provide elected members with an update on the operations of the Millicent Saleyards. Included in the agenda was a prepared Millicent Saleyards Review authored by CEO Ben Gower, five deputations and numerous submissions from the public.
Coonawarra cabernet crowned country’s best
Gabrielle Duykers. A Coonwarra winery has won gold in a national wine competition, making history as the first winery outside the Margaret River region to claim the prize ... The prestigious competition saw the Yalumba 2019 'The Menzies' Cabernet Sauvignon take out both the top gold of the Coonawarra Wine Region and the overall trophy for Australia’s finest Cabernet.
New migrants join Naracoorte workforce
Gabrielle Duykers. Teys Naracoorte will welcome 15 new Pacific Island employees this month in an effort to support its cattle processing operations amid changing herd numbers. Teys general manager of corporate affairs John Langbridge said the plant was proud to be a strong employer in the community ... The new migrants will arrive in Naracoorte at a time of peak housing shortages across the region.
Modern mining in Maldon: Porcupine Flat Mill
As you drive towards Bendigo, past Porcupine Village and the dredge, you will see a sign on the left hand side of the road; ‘Octagonal Gold Processing Plant’. This facility, referred to as “the Mill,” is still operational and currently processing ore from Kaiser Reef A1 Gold Mine, located 23 kilometres from Jamieson.
When it rains, it paws for CFA Oscar1 Brigade
A specialist CFA brigade has been called out to two incidents within a week, both involving the rescue of a dog from a mine shaft. Bendigo-based Oscar1 Brigade helped rescue Bruno the Bull-Arab on Sunday 5 December after he’d fallen down a mine shaft at Castlemaine Diggings National Park. Captain Daniel McMahon said it was quite unusual and surprising to receive another call less than six days later, this time to rescue Terry the Kelpie-cross from a mine shaft at Woodend.

At the recent launch of Jeff Gardner’s book of poetry and prints Lucy the Dragon, Dr. Juliet O’Conor made a very insightful speech. She is a specialist in children’s book history, having curated a collection of five centuries of children’s books at the State Library of Victoria.
Queensland farmers combine world-class beef production & forest growth
The National Farmers Federation is celebrating the environmental credentials of Queensland beef producers ... The 2019 National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report shows growth of forest area of about 160,000 hectares since 2008. Australia’s latest State of the Forests Report also confirms steady forest growth during the previous five-year period.
Progress needed on floodplain harvesting
A Parliamentary Committee has detailed a number of ways to reform floodplain harvesting in NSW. NSW Farmers President James Jackson said even small steps towards evidence-based regulation of floodplain harvesting were better than the uncertainty surrounding the issue at present.
Report – Identification of fuel management locations and risk reduction potential
Planned burning is one of the most utilised fuel management activities, but the safe and effective application of this method is likely to be hindered by climate change (e.g. shrinking and shifting windows of opportunity) and potential adverse societal outcomes (e.g. smoke impact, risk of fire escape). For this reason, fire managers need access to detailed information to help them make informed decisions and select a fuel management strategy that is compatible with a range of factors.

According to the Q4 Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey, Australian farmers are still optimistic, if slightly moderated from the previous almost record breaking rates in the previous period ... With many crops damaged or destroyed in these regions, grain yields and resulting incomes across the grain sector are likely to be heavily reduced from what was expected to be one of the most significant winter harvests ever recorded.
Three million hectares land opens to carbon farming
More than three million hectares of unallocated Crown land in Western Australia will be released for carbon farming opportunities, to help the state reach its 2050 net zero target. With the price of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) expected to increase significantly by 2030, areas of WA's crown land estate are highly sought after for carbon farming initiatives.
Rinehart offloads cattle stations for $60m plus
Billionaire Gina Rinehart is nearing the end of a $300 million sell-down of cattle properties across northern Australia, after selling the Willeroo and Aroona stations for over $60 million.
