Putting community safety first with tougher action on youth crime and its causes: Palaszczuk, Ryan, Linard

It will be harder for serious repeat offenders to get bail and there will be even more investment in tackling the complex causes of youth crime, the Palaszczuk Government announced ... The new investment of $332 million will also help boost police resources ... including a new $25 million injection for high visibility police patrols and $17 million for expanded joint flying squads.

Where the line should be drawn between those who need firearms or use them for work, sport and recreation and community safety is a debate that's in full swing in Western Australia where the McGowan government is in the middle of a complete redraft of the laws as to who can have a gun and who can't, along with what size, number, ammunition stocks, property location, size and mental health.

Prime Minister must show leadership on regional WA’s crime crisis: Littleproud

Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud is calling for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to urgently visit the Western Australian town of Carnarvon while he is in the state this week. Mr Littleproud said the Prime Minister should spend a night in Carnarvon, rather than holding a $1,500 a head fundraiser in Perth to appreciate what’s needed in this community and others across regional WA.

Blast from the past – Maldon’s local court

In 1855 the Royal Commission that examined the causes of the Eureka Stockade uprising recommended the establishment of Local Courts to make local mining by-laws and adjudicate local mining disputes. The Government appointed the chairmen of these Courts, but local miners elected the other members. The Local Courts were, therefore an early experiment in democracy.

Youth steal from another vulnerable resident

Emily Sherwood has restricted verbal capacity, and so it was even more heartbreaking to hear that she too was set upon by three teens recently. He got out bed, into the wheelchair and threw a towel over his lap. As he peered out the window he heard a "godawful" yelp and witnessed the girls kicking poor Max in the guts. Wanting to protect his beloved companion, Greg raced outside to confront three teenagers, who all appeared to be girls. They started throwing chairs, rocks and concrete pieces at him, before roughly tipping him out of his wheelchair.

New QPS high-tech drones ready for take off: Ryan

Queensland Police is preparing to launch two new high-tech Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) in the state’s north as part of ongoing trials in assisting frontline officers. The advanced Teledyne FLIR SkyRanger R70, used by militaries across the globe, has joined the QPS fleet and is undergoing testing ahead of its deployment to Townsville and Cairns.

Kids trouble: The government has to fix it, says Mayor

A 16-years-old Newtown boy has been charged with 21 offences following a series of property crime incidents including an alleged armed robbery at Preston ... the same group allegedly attended a Hinchliffe Drive property in Kearneys Spring, where it is alleged an occupant was struck with a hammer, before stealing a BMW Z4.

Grog ban first step

The recommendation to reinstate alcohol bans in Alice Springs town camps and outback home lands was described as “finally some commonsense” by the Independent MLA for Araluen, Robyn Lambley. But she says Dorrelle Anderson, who made the recommendation, should now go back to her work and “sort out child protection, the most critical problem in Central Australia” and “keep off the streets” children causing trouble.

Regulations needed to clean up bee industry

Beekeeper David Mumford from Narrandera’s King Bee Honey has expressed concerns for the future of his industry which he believes needs regulation to clean it up ... The recent varroa mite biosecurity emergency highlighted a lack of regulation and Mr Mumford would like to see the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) given more power to ensure safe practices.

Australian Manuka Honey Association (AHMA) is celebrating a sweet win as New Zealand Manuka Honey Appellation Society backs out of an appeal over naming rights before the UK High Court and similar legal action in the EU ... Mr Littleproud welcomed the win over New Zealand producers in Europe and the UK, but said the Labor Government and in particular Agriculture Minister Murray Watt had a role to play in supporting our home grown Manuka Honey farmers over their Trans-Tasman rivals.

Youth crime crisis: Robbie Katter

The youth crime crisis has not only once again revealed the Queensland Labor Government’s ineffective way of dealing with a problem but also exposes their disregard to the regions ... the fact that it took a response for a murder in Brisbane, not the constant high levels of violence and off the charts levels of offences occurring in Mount Isa, Townsville and Cairns, to incite some sort of change, is disappointing.

Mineral sands project set for public environmental review

A public environmental review has been set for a mineral sands project proposed for about 21km east of Ledge Point and 800m south of the Moore River due to the extent of further information required, the number of preliminary key environmental factors identified and the moderate level of public interest in the project. When the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) published its decision to assess the Bidaminna project proposal it said out of the 156 submissions received 153 had called for public environmental review.

Raptor squad muscles up to keep our regions safe: Perrottet, Toole

A muscled up NSW Police Force’s Raptor Squad will now have permanent bases in regional NSW, expanding to the state’s Northern and Southern regions to target and dismantle organised criminal networks. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the launch of the Raptor North and Raptor South squads will deliver an extra 30 staff, comprising investigators, Operations Support Group (OSG) operatives, and Traffic and Highway Patrol officers, to build on NSW’s crackdown on organised crime and criminal networks.

Downs police targeting youth crime

More than 20 young people in the Darling Downs area have been charged during a special holiday crackdown to combat youth offending. Operation Theta commenced on December 19, 2022 to proactively tackle youth offending during the busy school holiday period. In the first two weeks of the operation, Darling Downs District officers conducted 665 proactive activities, including a high visibility police presence in hotspot youth crime locations, shopping centre and business walkthroughs.

Feedback needed for policy on footpath trading

Southern Downs Regional Council's Regulatory Services Team is currently responsible for issuing approvals for various footpath trading activities ... interested in obtaining feedback from participants and/or clients of disability groups and agencies of service providers about what some of the issues/ concerns are that people with disability have with the current commercial use of footpaths in the region.

Yanchep rock lobster fisher has his licence suspended

A magistrate has suspended the rock lobster fishing licence of a Yanchep man and prohibited him from being on any vessel used for rock lobster fishing for six months. In Joondalup Court on January 6 the 33-year-old man was also issued with fines, penalties and court costs totalling $11,014.30 for unlawfully interfering with fishing gear and selling recreationally caught lobster.

Property offences at all-time high level

Local residents have unfortunately had to remain highly vigilant over the Christmas break as the chance of a thief breaking into a home looking to steal belongings and motor vehicles has been alarmingly high. Data that dates back to 2001 shows that in 2022 the Drayton Police Division ... had the most amount of unlawful entry offences on record. There were 234 unlawful offences recorded in 2022, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 161, set in 2021.

They say justice never takes a holiday, neither does crime it seems. Sadly, our sleepy safe community has been rocked by a wave of burglaries and vandalism. The not so jolly criminals appeared to get the jump on Santa with an early morning shop visit to Barham IGA before Christmas.

Local police light up station in blue in honour of two fallen Qld officers

The Tennant Creek Police force put on a touching show of solidarity with their Queensland counterparts by lighting up the station with blue lights on Wednesday night to honour the two police offers who were tragically killed in the line of duty on 12 December. To coincide with the state service of Constable McCrow and Constable Arnold who were killed in an execution-style ambush at a remote Wieambilla property in Qld.
