Ballooning mouse numbers a cause for concern: NSW Farmers
Farmers are on the lookout for increased mouse activity with reports of increasing damage to crops and fodder across the state. Two years after a mouse plague saw vehicles, buildings and towns infested while crops were destroyed, NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin is urging growers to be extra-vigilant about mouse activity.
Not for profit organisations secure funding to rebuild fences for flood-affected farmers
Volunteer-based not-for-profit organisations have received vital support through the Early Needs Recovery Program to help re-build, repair and clear fences in flood-affected areas ... "By providing this funding to ShoreTrack, BlazeAid and Rotary Australia to help with the fence rebuilding process, it is hoped to take some of the pressure off farmers to get this done so they can concentrate on other parts of their businesses and recover production quicker": Peta Holcombe, Early Needs Recovery Project Manager.

Aleph Farms joins the United Nations Global Compact
Aleph Farms, the first company to grow cultivated steaks directly from non-modified cow cells, announced that it has joined the  United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary leadership platform for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible business practices. As a Participant in the UN Global Compact, Aleph Farms will publish an annual Communication on Progress (COP) to demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to responsible business action in support of broader societal goals.

NSW Farmers ready to work with new Cabinet: NSW Farmers
The state’s peak farming body says the incoming Agriculture Minister will need to hit the ground running to keep food production on track. On Tuesday NSW Premier Chris Minns announced Queanbeyan-based upper house MP Tara Moriarty would be the new Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW.
Wage review must consider the rising cost of farming: NFF
As the Fair Work Commission considers submissions for the annual Wage Review, farmers are calling for a cautious approach that considers the unrelenting economic challenges facing the industry. National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Chief Executive Officer Tony Mahar said workers were entitled to the right to earn a fair and liveable wage, but a balance must be struck when considering farm businesses’ limited ability to pass on the cost of a wage increase.

2900 quarantine turkey poults nearly ready to fly the coop: DAFF
Australia’s state-of-the-art avian quarantine facility is filling the role of midwife to nearly 3000 turkey poults in Victoria. The team at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility in Mickleham together with industry experts have nurtured 2900 turkey eggs from Canada during their minimum 13-week quarantine period.
Safeguard mechanism needs to be safe for agriculture: NFF
As changes to the Safeguard Mechanism enter the home stretch in Parliament, farmers are warning that the impacts of a turbocharged offsets market need to be considered. National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Chief Executive Officer Tony Mahar said while agriculture was excluded from safeguard mechanism requirements, the 215 emitters it captures will be hungry for offsets from farmland.

Statement on UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement: NFF
We welcome the ratification of Australia’s trade deal with the United Kingdom by the UK Parliament. This deal improves access to an important market for Aussie farmers. It will also give UK consumers the option of sustainable, high quality Australian produce on supermarket shelves to complement their existing home-grown options.
Future of food production will need partnership from new Labor government: NSW Farmers
The state’s peak farming body says Labor will need to make strategic investments in the agricultural sector to pay for election promises and secure the future food supply. NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin said partnering with industry to bolster food and fibre production would be key to Labor’s next four years, which will help drive economic activity to deliver the programs and services the people of NSW need.
NAB Rural Commodities Index stabilises after a rocky start to 2023 Â Â
After steep falls in late 2022 and early 2023, many Australian agricultural commodity prices have stabilised, according to the NAB March Rural Commodities Wrap released on 27 March 2023. While the NAB Rural Commodities Index* was down 1.2% in February, almost all of the downside was driven by falling cattle prices as the industry faces parallel challenges of higher turnoff, processor constraints and tough global conditions.

What is a sacred site? According to the government, sacred sites are places within the landscape that have a special meaning or significance under Aboriginal tradition. Hills rocks, waterholes, trees, plains, lakes, billabongs and other natural features can be sacred sites ... There’s more to love at this year’s field days
The ‘Love Life’ wellbeing marquee will be buzzing with excitement as people from around the region gather for the second Upper Murray Agricultural Field days to be held in Corryong on April 12th and 13th, 2023. The event is being organised by Emergency Recovery Victoria (ERV) to promote wellbeing and encourage field days’ goers to "love their life."
