The deaths of 26 women in the first 114 days of 2024 is equivalent to one every 4.38 days, it is a global epidemic, and local communities are demanding an end to the killing.
In the Buloke Shire for the year end September 2023, 58 incidents of family violence were reported to Victoria Police and 75 per cent of all reported victims – survivors of family violence in the Buloke region – were female.
The violence perpetrated against women most often occurs in their home and is most often perpetrated by their intimate partner. Violence crosses all cultural, age and socio-economic boundaries.
This week, the five neighbourhood houses in Buloke are standing together with their local football, netball and hockey clubs to raise awareness of what we can ALL do to reduce future incidences of violence by having zero tolerance of violence in all its forms, including physical, emotional and sexual.
Throughout this week (Monday, May 29, to Sunday May 5), Neighbourhood Houses will be promoting the vision of the White Ribbon campaign that “strives for a society where all women and children are safe”.
The week will incorporate a Mount of Prevention Round between Wycheproof-Narraport and Charlton and a White Ribbon Round between Birchip-Watchem Bulls and Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers played on Saturday, May 4.
