Whyalla City Council, Media Release, 21 May 2026

Residents looking to clear out unwanted household items are being reminded that there are practical alternatives to illegal dumping, with the annual Garage Sale Trail continuing to provide Whyalla households with an opportunity to reuse, recycle and earn extra money from pre-loved goods each year.

Illegal dumping continues to impact communities through unnecessary clean-up costs, environmental damage and reduced amenity across public spaces. Initiatives such as Garage Sale Trail provide residents with another way to responsibly manage unwanted belongings while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable city. Garage Sale Trail is a national initiative that encourages communities to extend the life of household items by hosting garage sales, shopping second-hand and keeping reusable goods out of landfill.

Each year, Whyalla City Council supports local participation by helping community members facilitate their own sales, connect with buyers and take part in the wider reuse movement. From furniture and homewares to clothing, books, toys and collectables, many items destined for disposal can find a second life through community garage sales.

Mayor Phill Stone encourages the community to get involved in this annual initiative.

“Garage Sale Trail happens every November, so now is a good time to start compiling items and give them a second chance, you can declutter your homes and make some extra money in the process.”

“I encourage residents to think twice before disposing of usable items and explore alternatives that support reuse, reduce waste and help keep Whyalla looking its best.”

There are plenty of ways to give unwanted items a new home before considering disposal, keeping our city clean is a shared responsibility and helps us all to Enjoy Whyalla!
