Lismore City Council, Media Release, 21 May 2026

Lismore City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the Northern Rivers Rail Trail through Lismore, despite this week’s unsuccessful federal funding outcome.

The $42 million application was submitted in 2024, in partnership with Byron Shire Council, to progress the rail trail section from Lismore to Bexhill.

Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg said Council remained committed to the project’s long-term vision and would continue to prepare for future funding opportunities.

“We are disappointed in the funding decision handed down this week; delivering the rail trail through Lismore remains a strategic priority for Council,” Mayor Krieg said.

“From an economic development perspective, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail continues to represent a significant long-term tourism, visitation and connectivity opportunity for the Northern Rivers. The strategic rationale for the project remains strong.”

Council will now review the work completed so far, and staff will meet internally to determine next steps and continue preparing for future grant opportunities.

Mayor Krieg said Council was also planning for the project’s eventual success by incorporating the rail trail into North Lismore road development and infrastructure works where possible.

“We are continuing to plan ahead so we are ready to move when future funding opportunities arise,” he said.
