Crackdown on chop chop
Is our usually quiet town turning into a hotspot for trading chop chop - illegal tobacco? Last week, South Australia Police (SAPOL) conducted searches at a home and business in Naracoorte, seizing around $1,000 worth of illicit tobacco. The home and business involved were not publicly identified.

Rideshare gets the nod to operate state-wide
The state government has removed restrictions on metropolitan rideshare and chauffeur drivers, allowing them to operate statewide. Changes were expected to be gazetted last week, with rideshare and chauffeur drivers no longer required to apply for a separate accreditation to operate outside of the metropolitan boundary.
World domination begins: RYT take to the stage
Madison Eastmond. Joining forces with other regional artists and teen ensembles in Whyalla and Bendigo for the 2025 Adelaide Festival, the Riverland Youth Theatre (RYT) will bunker down to survive an alien invasion in their new collaboration and retelling of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.
Morgan’s growth potential highlighted
Christine Webster. Morgan has been identified as the second-top town to have growth potential in an early engagement community and stakeholder survey, conducted by Adelaide-based firm URPS, for Mid Murray Council.
Pioneer is number one
The Murray Pioneer was named South Australia’s Best Country Newspaper for 2024 at last week’s Country Press SA Awards. The [Murray] Pioneer enjoyed an outstanding night at the awards ceremony, which was held at the Hilton Hotel, in Adelaide, highlighted by the best newspaper crown, which it had last won in 2019.

Huey to chopper in for opening
Jenny Oldland. There is no doubt that Roger Hogben and John Edwards, the driving force behind the establishment of the Vietnam War Memorial Walk between Edithburgh and Coobowie, have not been afraid to aim high right from the start. In a major coupe they have secured a Huey helicopter and crew set to fly from Nowra, New South Wales, to Edithburgh for the official opening of the walk on August 18, Vietnam Veterans’ Day.
Marina ahoy
Joanna Tucker. Berth owners at the Copper Cove Marina, Wallaroo, have agreed to fund major mooring upgrades, totalling $800,000. Voting at a general meeting of berth owners and residents on February 19 was almost unanimous to privately fund the project.
A fringe too far for Yorke Peninsula
Sarah Herrmann. Just one act is visiting Yorke Peninsula this Adelaide Fringe season, while regions a similar distance from the city, such as the Clare and Barossa Valleys, are hosting up to 30 events. This has prompted a local arts advocate to urge YP audiences to speak out and, importantly, show up when the time comes, if they want to see more arts offerings here.

Councillors, staff not protected
Elected members and council staff do not have parliamentary privilege like state and federal politicians do. They can be sued for defamation, slander, and libel as a result of what is said during any of their meetings, especially those which are open to the public and livestreamed. At Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s January 28 meeting, CEO Trevor Smart explained his previous advice around livestreaming and tort law.
Alleged thief caught – Local businessman calls for greater police presence
After enduring nearly $15,000 in losses from multiple break-ins and spending around $30,000 on security upgrades, a local businessman is finally feeling a sense of relief. Police have arrested and charged a suspect believed to be responsible for the break-ins at a block of shops in Naracoorte.
Basin water conference comes to lower Murray in 2025: MDBA, Murray Bridge Council
The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) will hold its fifth annual water conference 29 and 30 July in the city of Murray Bridge in regional South Australia. MDBA Chief Executive Andrew McConville said it was the first time River Reflections would be held in this part of the southern Basin where community interests and water management challenges differed to those further upstream.
Farmers concerned over dingo protection changes in North-West Victoria
Mallee farmers are voicing frustration over changes to dingo management laws, fearing increased threats to their livestock as wild dogs seek water and food amid dry conditions ... Riverlanders work to restore local turtle populations
Madison Eastmond ... being carried out in the Hills and Fleurieu, Limestone Coast and Northern, and Yorke as a multi-region intuitive, the TURTLE Project is a collaborative effort of landscape boards, First Nations, citizen scientists, NGOs, councils and landholders to gather information to guide the protection of freshwater turtles across South Australia.
Our Vietnam vets link arms with American ‘brothers’
In an unprecedented gesture of support and mateship for their American ‘brothers-in-arms’, the Riverland Vietnam Veterans will join with the United States in commemorating US National Vietnam Veterans Day, on Saturday 29 March, at 11am ... The Riverland event, already dubbed the ‘Brothers-in-Arms Commemoration’, brings together all veterans and their families, united in recognising the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and servicewomen, while welcoming all interested members of the public to attend.
‘Desperation’ over doctor shortage
Christine Webster. The Australia-wide problem of being unable to attract enough doctors to rural areas is impacting heavily on the Waikerie Medical Centre and local community ... Dr Wanguhu said young doctors often preferred to take up posts at medical centres in Barmera, Berri and Renmark where they were not required to work in an emergency hospital.
