With vaccination rates steadily growing across the state, Queensland’s agricultural sector is set for strong 2021-22 results surpassing the previous high in the 2016-2017 season. Queensland’s primary industry commodities have been forecast to reach $20.66 billion in total value for the current season, up 8% on 2020-21 and the 5-year average.

German THF capitalises on booming AG sector

Five separate Queensland-based buyers have splashed out over $100 million combined for the THF cattle and irrigated fodder portfolio in the Fitzroy Basin. Spanning 21,900 hectares west of Rockhampton, include the 9,212 hectare Lucie Station at Bluff, as well as Mostowie (3,859 hectares), Karamea (3,744 hectares), Bindaree (3,168 hectares) and the 1,917 hectare The Pocket.

Council contemplates future for Emerald Ag College site

The future of the former Emerald Agricultural College site could be secured in early 2022, with Central Highlands Regional Council confirming its interest in acquiring part of the land. In a general council meeting in October, councillors voted to provide formal advice to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) about council’s desire to purchase approximately 350 hectares of the site, located on the Capricorn Highway.

$5 million for water security research in Northern Australia

$5 million will be available between three leading Northern Australian universities for research into water security in Northern Australia. The money from the Federal Government, through the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA), is for Charles Darwin University (CDU), CQUniversity Australia (CQU) and James Cook University (JCU).

Aurukun mayor Keri Tamwoy last week joined Kailung Hudson, Estelle Yunkaporta and Sheryl Pamulkan from the Akay Koo’oila Women’s Art Centre for the opening of the Mermaid ‘Zeloh’ exhibition as part of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. The women created the mermaid and woven bowls from a ghost net they retrieved from underneath the art centre.

Timaru breeding station sells for $5m

Vendors of North Queensland’s Timaru have netted the $5 million asking price for the 16,596-hectare breeding operation. A producer from Springsure, in the state’s Central Highlands, bought the property, with the sale including 740 crossbred cows, 350 calves, 30 bulls, up to 50 heifers, and some plant.

Gladstone site to make way for $300m industrial plant

Alpha HPA has purchased a 9.2-hectare site in Gladstone, Queensland to develop a $300 million high purity alumina industrial plant. Alpha HPA has now received approval from the government for the first two stages of its Gladstone hub, which will be built in tandem, bringing jobs to Queensland not only in the delivery stage but once the hub is fully operational.

Cattle family rope in Bandana Station

Owners of the Bunderra Cattle Co brand, the Pickersgill family, have reportedly spent more than $30 million acquiring Bandana Station, in the foothills of the Carnarvon Ranges. The Central Highlands family already owns a portfolio of nine cattle properties around Rolleston, Bauhinia Downs, Alpha and the Northern Territory.

Twiggy Forrest becomes a ratepayer after $42m buy

Mining and cattle magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest has become one of Cook Shire’s biggest ratepayers after he paid $42 million for Lizard Island. Mr Forrest and his wife Nicola’s private investment company Tattarang splashed $42 million for the Great Barrier Reef resort ... Tattarang declined to comment on the Lizard Island deal, but the vendor, Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed SEA Group, announced the deal in an investor statement.

New air service to Brisbane

Wagga Wagga will have regular airline services flying direct to a third Australian capital city from early next year. Riverina travellers will have direct flights to Queensland when QantasLink starts flying between Wagga Wagga and Brisbane from 28 March, 2022.

A $300 million high purity alumina industrial plant is a step closer for Gladstone with Alpha HPA purchasing a 9.2 hectare site in the Queensland Government’s State Development Area.

New Queensland strategy to bring wild dogs to heel

Minister for Agricultural, Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the Queensland Dog Offensive Group (QDOG) developed the new five-year strategy in consultation with stakeholders. “The Queensland Wild Dog Management Strategy 2021-2026 provides state-wide coordination and direction to wild dog management,” Mr Furner said.
