Housing supply worsens as demand increases: HIA
“The Government is set to fall well short of their goal of building one million homes over five years according to report from their peak housing advisory body (NHFIC),” stated Tim Reardon, HIA’s Chief Economist. The National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC) released their ‘State of the Nation Housing 2022-23’ report, which highlights that the under supply of housing is set to worsen as demand continues to out paces supply.

The Authority discussed the ongoing consequences of recent floods through the Basin, in particular the tragic fish deaths this month in the Barka-Darling River at Menindee. They expressed their deep concern about the impact on local communities and the river environment and commended the coordinated efforts of water management agencies and the NSW Police to address community concerns, to ensure potable water supply and to effectively remove a great many dead fish from the river.

Beam commences shared e-scooter operations in Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Australia’s largest shared micromobility company Beam will commence shared e-scooter operations across the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, marking the city’s first shared e-scooter trial. 200 of Beam’s leading e-scooters will be introduced to the streets, available for use 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, improving transport options and connections for both leisure and commuting.
2900 quarantine turkey poults nearly ready to fly the coop: DAFF
Australia’s state-of-the-art avian quarantine facility is filling the role of midwife to nearly 3000 turkey poults in Victoria. The team at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility in Mickleham together with industry experts have nurtured 2900 turkey eggs from Canada during their minimum 13-week quarantine period.
Echuca Moama Discovery this Saturday
Local residents are encouraged to come along to Echuca Library this Saturday for the annual Echuca Moama Discovery Day. The event will showcase over 50 groups from Echuca Moama and surrounds, ranging from local service and sporting clubs, to singing, art, craft, history groups and many other community organisations.
Taking action on buffel: Moss
The Northern Territory Government has announced the establishment of a technical working group to assess the impacts of, and approaches to buffel grass management in Central Australia, which will include consideration of declaring buffel grass a weed under the Weeds Management Act 2001. While buffel grass has provided valuable fodder as well as dust suppression and erosion control in desert areas since the 1960s, there is increasing concern about its role in heightening wildfire intensity, and associated impacts on biodiversity.
Safeguard mechanism needs to be safe for agriculture: NFF
As changes to the Safeguard Mechanism enter the home stretch in Parliament, farmers are warning that the impacts of a turbocharged offsets market need to be considered. National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Chief Executive Officer Tony Mahar said while agriculture was excluded from safeguard mechanism requirements, the 215 emitters it captures will be hungry for offsets from farmland.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles announced urgent bail legislation will be introduced to parliament which will see a new presumption against bail for violent offences involving a weapon. There will also be a presumption against bail for co-offenders who participate in violent offences involving a weapon, even if they do not possess the weapon themselves.
Historic native title for Eastern Maar: Williams
Eastern Maar peoples in Victoria’s south-west have gained formal recognition of their land rights in the first Victorian native title determination in a decade, with support from the Andrews Labor Government. Minister for Treaty and First People Gabrielle Williams joined the Eastern Maar Country at a hearing on Country at Logans Beach to hear the Federal Court’s consent determination - which will formally recognise the groups native title rights.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has strengthened ties with its Singaporean counterparts, signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will extend a long-standing relationship beyond two decades ... DFES and SCDF have shared a fruitful interagency relationship since 2005, swapping firefighting tactics and techniques, exchanging staff for personal and professional development and collaborating on research programs.

Public Health Alert: Northern Territory in peak risk period for mosquito-borne diseases
NT Health is urging Northern Territory (NT) residents and visitors to protect themselves from mosquito bites, following detection of the potentially fatal Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses in mosquitoes. Mosquito numbers are currently high in the Barkly region due to the recent rains, and are expected to increase in the Top End, with numbers already at high levels in areas close to swamps, creeks and wetlands.

We welcome the ratification of Australia’s trade deal with the United Kingdom by the UK Parliament. This deal improves access to an important market for Aussie farmers. Future of food production will need partnership from new Labor government: NSW Farmers
The state’s peak farming body says Labor will need to make strategic investments in the agricultural sector to pay for election promises and secure the future food supply. NAB Rural Commodities Index stabilises after a rocky start to 2023
After steep falls in late 2022 and early 2023, many Australian agricultural commodity prices have stabilised, according to the NAB March Rural Commodities Wrap released on 27 March 2023. While the NAB Rural Commodities Index* was down 1.2% in February, almost all of the downside was driven by falling cattle prices as the industry faces parallel challenges of higher turnoff, processor constraints and tough global conditions.
