Great teamwork at Wilcannia Post Office

Recent stories

It’s always nice to drop in at the Wilcannia Post Office because the staff are so warm hearted, friendly and helpful. There’s often time between customers for a quick chat and a joke so it’s a cheery atmosphere as well as being an efficient service for our community.

Team leader Charles Vu

I’ve been working here for coming up to five years. I’ve been learning on the job. I enjoy my interactions with the local people and helping the community by providing a good service. I’ve learnt to work on three levels: Wilcannia Post is Commonwealth; Services New South Wales is state; and working for the Shire Council is local. That’s been a good experience for me.

My favourite thing I’ve learnt in Wilcannia is about the culture of the local Aboriginal people. That’s not something you’d experience in the big cities.

I’ve been working here three years now and it’s given me a different idea of how Post Offices operate. My favourite part of the work is Services New South Wales, because it’s something varied, with different things coming in. Car registration is one of the transactions; and I really like seeing community members achieve their goal of getting their driving licences.

I’ve been working here for three years this year. I like the contact with the community, being able to talk to people, sometimes have an in-depth conversation, find out how they’re doing, if they need a bit of extra support. It makes me feel included in the community, part of the Mob.

When I started working for the Council, I wasn’t very good at communicating, but since working here, my communication skills in particular have improved a lot. Also I’ve learnt a lot about working with money. I struggled with maths at High School, but since working here I’ve learnt about how cash flow works. In the future I might like a different career, but at the moment I feel good being here at Australia Post.

When we asked Charles if he had thoughts of a different career in the future, he laughed and said ‘I’m enjoying my work here, but I’ll go anywhere my wife allows me to go!’

We told his wife, Kim, about that. She laughed and said, ‘Good! I’ve trained him well!’
