Uncle Sunno, a proud Paakantji man, has been working tirelessly for 20 years, to support the learning of children and young people in Wilcannia. For the non – Aboriginal teaching staff, he is a vital link to the local community. His deep knowledge of Paakantji culture supports the school staff to develop the cultural competence required to be effective educators.

He shares the stories of his ancestors willingly with teachers, students and staff and demonstrates every day that by sharing knowledge he is helping to keep it alive for the next generation. At school Uncle Sunno watches over all his family and has supported two generations of children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to be safe and successful at school.

Uncle Sunno is also a successful artist and so is a positive role model to all aspiring artists in the school community. Through his practice, he demonstrates to all, the ways art can not only offer financial independence but is also soothing for the soul.
