Sergeant Jim Richardson brings community focus to Nhill police role

Recent stories

Sergeant Jim Richardson has taken up his new role in Nhill with a clear focus: community connection, education, and proactive engagement.

With over four decades of experience in policing, including 31 years based at Goroke, Jim is no stranger to the needs and strengths of rural communities. He officially began his posting in Nhill in December and says he’s looking forward to working closely with residents across the region — in townships, on farms, and within the Karen community.

“We’ve got a great team here in Nhill,” he said. “One of the main reasons I came here was the opportunity to work alongside a group of people who are genuinely committed to serving in the best interests of the community.”

Sergeant Richardson believes building strong relationships is key to a safer, more connected town. “Our focus is on education first, then enforcement,” he explained.

“We want to work with schools, community groups, and individuals to encourage a shared sense of responsibility and respect.”

While in Goroke, Jim was actively involved in a number of youth programs, including the Victoria Police Youth Development Program (VYPD) and the Advance initiative — both aimed at instilling community values in young people. Through one of these programs, he also helped local students gain essential driving skills via a driver education scheme.

His long career has included international service as well, with a period of peacekeeping work in East Timor.

Now settled in Nhill, Jim says he’s eager to continue his passion for community engagement, particularly in supporting local youth and fostering stronger ties with the Karen community.

“We want to make sure everyone feels they’re part of the conversation,” he said.
