Volunteers take the spotlight in Hindmarsh

Recent stories

National Volunteer Week will be celebrated across Hindmarsh Shire from 18 to 24 May, with a series of local activities recognising the people who give their time, skills and energy to the community.

This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, encourages people to think about the role volunteering plays in building connection, purpose and stronger communities.

Across the shire, volunteers are involved in many areas of community life, from service groups and local events to tourism, libraries, sport, emergency services and community support programs. National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to say thank you, while also inviting new people to consider getting involved.

Hindmarsh Shire Libraries will host a Volunteer Shout Out board during the week, giving community members the chance to recognise an individual, group or project that deserves appreciation.

Residents can call into libraries at Nhill, Dimboola, Jeparit and Rainbow to add their message. Contributions might include a personal reflection on volunteering, a memorable experience, advice for someone thinking about volunteering, or a note of thanks to a person or group who has made a difference.

As part of the celebrations, volunteers are also invited to enjoy a free classic movie and morning tea at the Nhill Memorial Community Centre. The film Young Frankenstein will screen on Tuesday 19 May from 10am, with light morning tea and refreshments provided. The event will offer volunteers a chance to relax, catch up and share stories with others in the community.

Council’s regular Cuppa Connections program will also include special Volunteer Week sessions, with guest speakers discussing volunteering opportunities in Hindmarsh Shire. Cuppa Connections is designed as an informal way for people to meet others, reconnect with friends and enjoy a cuppa in their local library.

Volunteer Week Cuppa Connections sessions will be held at Jeparit on Wednesday 20 May from 10am to 12 noon, Rainbow on Wednesday 20 May from 2pm to 4pm, Nhill on Thursday 21 May from 10am to 12 noon, and Dimboola on Thursday 28 May from 10am to 12 noon.

Hindmarsh Shire Council is also using the week to highlight local volunteering opportunities and groups currently seeking volunteers. Community groups and organisations are invited to take part through volunteer spotlights, recruitment promotions and stories that show the value of volunteering across the district.

Council will also provide educational resources to community groups registered through its database. These resources include training opportunities, templates and information on reducing volunteer burnout, streamlining administration and keeping up to date with relevant legislation.

For those who have been thinking about volunteering, National Volunteer Week is a good time to take the first step. Whether someone has a few hours to spare, a practical skill to share, or simply wants to be more connected to their community, there are many ways to contribute.
