Remembering Elliot McAdam: Local leader honoured for service to Barkly

Recent stories

Tributes for iconic local Elliot McAdam AM have flowed in across social media following his death on Monday.

The news has also been covered widely by media.

Born in his namesake town of Elliott, Mr McAdam spent many years of his early life in Adelaide before returning to the Barkly in the 90s to take on the role as General Manager of Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation.

An opportunity to enter the world of politics saw Mr McAdam elected to the NT Legislative Assembly as the Labor Member for Barkly in 2001. He stayed in this role until 2008.

Following the 2005 election, Mr McAdam was appointed as Minister for Local Government and Housing with more portfolios added soon after.

During this time he led innovative major local government reform to protect local government in the bush.

He quit Cabinet in early 2008 over this very issue when his Chief Minister backflipped on plans to merge three Top End councils into one of nine or so super shires across the Territory.

Post-politics, Mr McAdam continued to work in managerial positions, including being a board member on a number of local organisations, and was also elected to the Barkly Regional Council.

He continued to fight for justice, better facilities, and a fair go for his beloved Barkly right up until his death this week.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler paid tribute to Mr McAdam’s service to the NT Parliament and to the people from across the Barkly.

“He was a fierce advocate for his community and oversaw many positive changes for his region,” she said.

“Mr McAdam’s passion, strength and commitment to task were unwavering, and his legacy will live on for many years to come.”
