New social and affordable homes for Tennant Creek

Recent stories

Thanks to a $6.9 million partnership between the Northern Territory Government, the Australian Government, Housing Australia, and Venture Housing Company, people needing safe, secure, and affordable housing in Tennant Creek will benefit from the construction of 12 new social and affordable homes.

The homes will be delivered across three adjoining sites and comprise five social and seven affordable homes.

The homes will be available for people eligible for social or affordable housing.

Community Housing Provider Venture Housing is developing 12 two-bedroom homes. It is also contributing land and $1.5 million towards the project development costs.

This is supported by a $1.9 million grant under the Barkly Regional Deal (Northern Territory Government $0.95 million and Australian Government $0.95 million), an additional capital grant of $500,000 from the Northern Territory Government and a $3 million grant from Housing Australia.

This is the first Northern Territory targeted grant Housing Australia is funding via the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Social and Affordable Housing fund to support the development of more homes in the Northern Territory.

Minister for Urban Housing Ngaree Ah Kit said safe and secure housing created better outcomes for Territorians.

“The construction of new homes in Tennant Creek not only supports the objectives of the Barkly Regional Deal to make the region a great place to live, but also means more social housing for Territorians in need,” she said.

”Everyone deserves to have a place to call home, and we are proud to be working with the Australian Government, Housing Australia and Venture to transform the way social and affordable housing is delivered in the Northern Territory.”

The transition of delivery and management of social and affordable housing to CHPs was announced as part of the Northern Territory Community Housing Growth Strategy 2022–32.

The strategy aims to transform how housing is delivered in the Northern Territory by providing targeted, sector-led housing services, contributing to community renewal, and attracting non-government investment in social and affordable housing.

The homes are expected to be completed by February 2025.
