Saturday 16 March 2023 was an exciting day for the Nhill community with the official opening of the Nhill Cane Ball court by Dr Anne Webster MP, Member for Mallee, and Cr Brett Ireland, Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor.
Approximately 100 people attended the official opening with speeches from Cr Brett Ireland, Thomas Sawin, Karen Community representative, Helen Cannell, Nhill Tennis Club Secretary, and Dr Anne Webster.
Following the official opening those in attendance enjoyed a BBQ and traditional Karen food.
Karen community members provided a demonstration of Cane Ball, showing how agile they are to be able to get the ball over the net using only their feet or heads.
The Nhill Cane Ball Court was funded through the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program, Hindmarsh Shire Council and Luv-a-duck.
Installation of a permanent shade structure and seating, and spreading of grass seed will be completed in the near future.
