Queensland Budget ‘another black hole’

The 2023-24 Queensland State Budget, delivered last week, has been harshly condemned by Member for Condamine Pat Weir, who says the people of his electorate have again missed out on significant investment.

Plans for new western bypass

Just as the original Toowoomba Bypass radically changed the nature of transport for the east-west axis of Toowoomba, a north-south bypass, on the western side of town, would make a huge impact on the local region. A Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson confirmed TMR is undertaking a planning project to protect a future state transport corridor west of Toowoomba.

Subsidy increased to ease financial burden on travelling patients: Fentiman

A travel subsidy for patients who access essential health care away from their home communities will be increased to help vulnerable Queenslanders manage cost of living pressures. The Palaszczuk Government announced that the recent state budget would fund an increase in the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS).

Urgent call to overhaul fire ant eradication program

AgForce is calling for a rapid overhaul of the State Government’s outdated fire ant eradication program, in a bid to save southeast Queensland from a dangerous pest. It follows revelations that the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program Strategic Review - conducted two years ago stated eradication was impossible under the current plan and an "urgent change of strategy" was needed.

Goomburra emergency action group

Federal MP Kevin Hogan isn’t holding back in his criticism of the State Government halving the number of buybacks of Northern Rivers flooded homes. The decision to drastically cut the Northern Rivers homes buybacks was made even worse by an announcement that the Federal Government would be boosting buybacks in Queensland by an additional 300 homes, Mr Hogan said.

Queensland communities welcome first PNG aged care workers to Australia: Conroy, Wells

The first group of workers from Papua New Guinea to be employed in Australia’s aged care sector under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme has arrived in regional Queensland. The eight workers from PNG provinces including Western Highlands, New Ireland and Morobe will be employed by Southern Cross Care at aged care facilities at Chinchilla, Murgon and Taroom in Southeast Queensland, where local aged care staff have been hard to find.

Power prices to surge

A report released by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) last week shows Ergon customers can expect significant price rises on their electricity bills ... The QCA report says the energy cost rise has been caused by higher gas and coal prices and uncertainties around the availability and reliability of coal-fired power plants and their impacts on the supply–demand balance in Queensland.

4% increase for ratepayers

Urban residential ratepayers will have an annual increase in their rates of close to $130, or 4 per cent, after Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) adopted its 2023-24 Budget last week. Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said Council’s $651 million financial plan would maintain and upgrade existing services and facilities while planning for a brighter future for current and successive generations.
