UniSA study checks-in on farmers’ wellbeing post flood disaster
Farmers rely on good weather to grow crops and sustain livestock, so when the Bureau of Meteorology issues an El Niño warning, it’s a bitter pill to swallow given that so many farmers and rural communities across Australia are still reeling from recent floods. Now, researchers at the UniSA are hoping to connect with farmers who have been affected by the 2022-23 floods to better understand their first-hand experiences and how they would like to be supported to regain optimal wellbeing.
National farmer survey reveals angst over government agenda: NFF

Boost for koala conservation in South-East Qld: Plibersek, Neumann
The $2m project being carried out in Grandchester and Flinders Peak will include activities like planting koala-friendly trees, removing weeds that prevent koalas moving between existing koala habitat and are a fire risk, reducing livestock grazing on habitat to facilitate natural regeneration, and protecting existing koala habitat through fire management. The project will be delivered by Healthy Land and Water, and will support landholders to better protect koalas on their land.
NT Police begin wanding in the Northern Territory: Worden
Stronger powers to allow NT Police to stop and search individuals for knives and other dangerous weapons are now in operation in the Northern Territory. Earlier this year, the Territory Labor Government strengthened the Police Legislation Further Amendment Bill 2023 to allow our Police to use hand-held scanners to detect concealed weapons.

Release plan adjusted at Menindee Lakes to account for potential rain: MDBA
Senior Director of River Management Joe Davis said the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) had instructed WaterNSW to hold releases from Weir 32 at the current rate of 1,000 megalitres per day while the effects of the forecast rainfall on system flows could be determined. “Managing river flows and storages in the Basin is complex and requires us to work adaptively to account for changing demands and conditions,” Mr Davis said.

Farmers losing confidence as government risks Middle Eastern gaffe: NFF
In a letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, farming groups have expressed frustration and warned of irreversible harm to the agricultural sector and to Australia’s trade and diplomatic partnerships in the Middle East. Calling on the Prime Minister and Minister Watt to reverse its policy on the phase out of live sheep by sea, the groups said the ban was pointless, expensive and disruptive.
Rex to make more reductions to its regional network
Rex said the airline is forced to make further reductions to its regional network as the major carriers, particularly the Qantas Group, continued their relentless pillaging of Rex’s pilot group. The reductions, effective from 30 October, all involve the regional routes serviced by Rex’s fleet of Saab 340 turboprop aircraft.

The Palaszczuk Government is refurbishing a vacant motor inn to help young people at risk of homelessness. Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon announced the motel will be transformed into temporary supported accommodation to provide an additional 19 semi-self-contained rooms for young people aged between 16 to 24 years.
