Police crisis

Recent stories

Bold measures and policies need to be put in place to solve the “crisis” facing police in Naracoorte and its surrounding towns.

Shadow Minister for Police Sam Telfer says there are some “real challenges” facing police in South Australia that are having huge repercussions for those living in the region.

Mr Telfer told The [Naracoorte Community] News that the recruitment and retention of officers was a huge challenge, with many police stations failing to get the required number of officers in a day.

“The challenges with recruitment and retention of officers have been laid bare, with the latest statistics showing 248 officers left the force last financial year, which significantly outweighs the rate of recruitment,” he claimed.

“Our police officers work so hard to keep our communities safe with the dwindling resources they have, but we have been told that there is a current shortfall of officers across the force of more than 200, and this is impacting our regions.”

He said the SA Police needs targeted strategies and incentives to get police officers to work in regional South Australia, which need to include consideration of the lack of appropriate and basic services like healthcare, childcare, and housing in our regions, which is hindering the recruitment and retention of such professionals.

“I’m shocked this has not been an issue that has been brought to me by the local member, as keeping our communities safe should be a paramount focus of local representatives.

“Although the crime levels within the South-east haven’t been getting the same attention as other parts of the state, people in the South-east deserve to be confident that when they need the help of the police, they have the capacity to do so.”

Responding to questions from The [Naracoorte Community] News on the delivery of efficient and timely police services, Minister for Police Joe Szakacs said the state government and SAPOL were dedicated to ensuring those who live in or visit the South-east are as safe as they can possibly be.

“The Limestone Coast LSA proactively responds to emerging trends to best dedicate resources to form a collaborative approach to ensuring community safety,” Mr Szakacs said.

“Naracoorte and its surrounds are one of the most beautiful places to visit in our state, and I’m confident as Minister that our hardworking frontline police are determined to ensure the South-east is vibrant and welcoming.”
