Country Arts SA is bringing Adelaide artist Dan Withey and his exhibition to Naracoorte this Friday, featuring bold colours, a strong graphic aesthetic, and subtle humour.

Called “Finite Bounty”, the touring exhibition dives into the concept of animism the belief that all things in the universe, not just humans possess a spiritual essence. This theme underpins the works which reveal the inter-connectedness between humans and the natural world.

Audiences will encounter a cast of surreal characters and curious landscapes where the wind, the mountains, and even the gallery walls watch back. These ever-present eyes are a playful device that invites viewers to consider what it means to be observed, not only by others but by the universe itself.

“Children have a perception that the universe is magical and I want to portray that,” Mr Withey said.

Born in the United Kingdom, Mr Withey moved to Adelaide aged 19 and studied illustration before becoming a full-time artist.

With a practice spanning over 15 years, his work draws on influences from graphic art, storytelling, dreamlike surrealism, and bold decorative patterning. Mr Withey has staged several recent solo exhibitions and his work has featured in major art prizes. Country Arts SA is touring the exhibition to regional areas over the next two years.

Mr Withey believes it is a wonderful opportunity to share his work with new audiences. On opening night at Naracoorte, he will discuss his exhibition pieces during an artist’s talk.

“Finite Bounty” opens at the Naracoorte Regional Art Gallery on Ormerod Street, Naracoorte on May 29, at 6pm with art enthusiasts and supporters most welcome to attend.
