Visitor Park update for local residents

Recent stories

Barkly Regional Deal hosted a BBQ information session on Wednesday to update interested community residents and stakeholders on the progress of the Tennant Creek Visitor Park.

The Visitor park aims to provide short-term, alternative and affordable accommodation for people travelling to town for cultural, health or social reasons.

Funded by the Federal Government back in 2018 to the tune of $5 million, with $1.5 million per year for three years thereafter for operational costs, the Visitor Park will provide safe, secure and alcohol-free accommodation for visitors from remote Aboriginal communities and outstations.

However, extra funding will need to be sought to complete the construction and design phase of the Park due to the rising costs of materials and services compared to five years ago.

Works have already started on the site, on the corner of Leichhardt Street and Udall Road.

The site was an industrial site prior, and remediation works have begun on the land to clear identified contaminants such as fuel from the soil.

Remediation works and environmental approval are expected to take up most of the year, with construction not expected to begin until 2024.

It is envisaged the Visitor Park will offer different types of accommodation including open, grassed camping areas, large covered shelters for swags and cabins.
